National & International Sports Awards

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was the ceremony for Olimpia awards, the most traditional award ceremony for sport in Argentina, voted by sport journalists.

There is a prize given to the best athlete in each sport in the year (both olympic and some non olympic sports). Among all the winners from each sport one is voted the argentine sportsperson of the year (the "Olimpia de oro").

The winner of 2018 was some local category car racer  It was a weak year for our sport in general but there was still a bit of controversy because handballer Diego Simonet didn't win the award after winning the champions league and being MVP of the final with Montpellier.

These journalists have a tendency to vote for the popular sports most of the time (in argentina that would be football, tennis, auto racing, pro boxing). They usually vote smaller sports for the big award only if someone was world or olympic champion but sometimes not even that! In 2012 they snubbed our only gold medalist in London for some pro boxer that won a shitty world title.

Now I'm curious who that car racer is. I only know Jose Maria Lopez but he is far from "some local category car racer" :p

Never heard of the guy or even the racing series, although it is interesting to know it's the oldest still active series in the world :)

His performance does indeed look kinda....little, compared to almost all others in that list. Then again, a polo player and a junior swimmer also won it in the last few years, let's say it's quite an interesting list of names :p

The Polo player in question is the best player in the world. Although Polo is not exactly very competitive worldwide.

Which makes for an (in my opinion) interesting choice. Even in the Netherlands korfball players are not anywhere near shortlists for even being nominated (individually or as team). Too bad Eurosport doesn't really show it (polo) anymore :d

Ana Marcela Cunha and Isaquias Queiroz won the Prêmio Brasil Olímpico, which is exactly the same duo that won in 2015. It was the second award for Cunha and third for Queiroz, so not a lot of variety here. Henrique Avancini won "Atleta da Torcida" (popular vote) thanks to the support of the "bike" community in Brazil.

One is indeed a lot more accessible and for 'normal' people than the other, but yes.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
