Can Johaug who compete in 5 km or more handle it? Still it’s not the same as go for 5km. No, Johaug could easily lose a couple of hundred metres over 1500m to a sprint: just would not work. Once your team is detached by more than 20m there’s no way back onto the group.

As the start runner in the team sprint, it's simply a matter of setting as high a pace as possible all three laps in order to give the final runner, optimally a sprinter, as much of a lead as possible. Because every meter that the start runner loses, the second runner must first make up, so that he may lack strength on the last lap. It is clear that Johaug would have no chance in the finish sprint, but that is not the task of the start runner. Just watch here Olympia 2018 how the distance runners in the second lap (from about 12:00) increase the pace so that the pure sprinters already get clear problems and in the third lap the pure sprinters then break away completely.: https://olympics.com/de/video/herren-team-sprint-finale-skilanglauf-pyeongchang-2018-wiederholung In this format you just don't stand a chance with two pure sprinters. You need at least one who is also top in the distance range. That's why relay teams like Finland with Niskanen and Parmakoski are highly rated, even though neither of them are pure sprinters. So the reigning world champions in Women team sprint has no chance because they are pure sprinters? Or have the format drastically changed since World Championships 2021? At the world championships 2021 it was an relatively easy 1.2km sprint course in skating, here it will be a hard 1.5km sprint in classic. And Dahlqvist and Sundling would be still the favorites, because they are also very good in classic and have some distance skills. Jochen Behle said that he would even go for two distance runners on the difficult course because it is simply too demanding. You think 1,2km and 1,5km is big difference but not 1,5km and 5km or more? So you think 1,5km from 1,2km will affect the pure sprinters but not 5km or more to 1,5km for long distance specialists? Hmm. Agree with the difference between classic and skating tough.

In the end, it adds up whether you have to run 7.2km or 9km. Add to that the altitude and the slow conditions. We will see next week Tuesday how many distance runners are on the start list in the end. FancyFenchel

dcro 10,210 Posted February 8, 2022 #488 Share Posted February 8, 2022 Pretty decent results for our girls... Malec tied her best Olympic finish with 53rd. Hadžić placed higher than her Bib. Should bode well for the team spring. Maybe we could beat Slovakia or something, Prochazkova is not looking too hot. #banbestmen

Olympian1010 7,936 Posted February 9, 2022 #490 Share Posted February 9, 2022 In my opinion, Sundling and Brennen were by far the strongest yesterday. It’s a shame that Brennen fell in the QF because that could have been an interesting battle latter. Cool to see Diggins win another medal “Sport has the power to change the world.
