Well, that's the thing with mixed nation mixed team events at the Youth Olympics. Same thing with speed skating at the winter version for example, where medals were won by athletes who individually would never be anywhere close to a medal, because they were in a team with some of the best individual skaters. I'm guessing the same thing happened in table tennis, badminton and so on.

In badminton, yes, but not in table tennis. Since the mixed team in table tennis is actually a pair, both of them have to be pretty good in order to advance. Only once a questionable player got a medal: a guy from Tunisia in 2010 because he was paired with the Chinese girl, but I still consider him to be a decent player. In smaller teams there's practically no way a low level athlete would earn a medal. But in big teams (6 to 13 people) it's very likely that a bad athlete will eventually win a medal somehow.

Right, I forget it's pairs in table tennis. Still, I'm sure there are other sports with a similar mixed team format. I think one might see it more as a sort of 'friendly' competition (and possibly an opportunity for 'minor athletes' to learn from the big guys and girls) and we - as big sports fans - shouldn't see them as anything too serious. Only Thomas Bach would introduce himself as a Youth Olympics mixed team champion.

First world championships men's team finale for :NED:p

I tried to focus on medals. If we add "first time in the final" there would be a lot more to discuss.

Rebeca Andrade scored 14.766 on vault at the Cottbus World Cup. This would have been enough for a silver medal at the World Championships two weeks ago.

It's insane how Brazil lacks planning. She didn't try a second vault at the World Championships.

Saeed Reza Keikha won bronze medal in Cottbus World Cup in Germany in pommel horse, I don't know how important are these world cups. (I assume not much but this is a kind of Olympic qualifier so maybe a bit more than before) but I think this is Iran's first ever medal in a FIG World Cup (Keikha himself had won a medal in a World Challenge before) good to see he also can "win medal" instead of just inventing new elements :d his score 15.133 was good enough for silver in Jakarta (even though I know it's hard to compare scores from different competitions)

my knowledge is limited about Gymnastics and its Olympic qualification. but how is his chance realistically to qualify for the Olympics ? I know they changed the qualification system giving more chance to individual apparatus specialists.

Indeed poor planning, she did amazing today her vault score would have earned the silver medal in vault

Plus she earned another medal on bars, so a great result.

Shout out to Marta Pihan-Kulesza who returned to competition after retirement (she had a baby) at the Cottbus World Cup and won a bronze medal on floor, despite the insanely deep field of athletes. Placing ahead or Lara Mori and Jade Carey was truly awesome! Respect! Love her floor routine and her infectious smile!

    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default?
