Speed Skating at the Winter Olympic Games 2018

"Speed" and "Skating" belong together like "Winter" and "Olympics" in this case, at least for me. You have successfully broken my harmony. :p

Winter Olympics --> Name of an event

Speed skating --> Just words

It's weird to write capital letter when talking about speed skating in a sentence, it's weird to have two capital letters in a thread title. So I'm happy it's not there, and I'm praying that it stays like this. Prepare for rants if someone changes this :p

We have any streaming for this?

It should be on the NOS website (well, it is :p). I wasn't home today (so I watched it on the NOS app) but I will post the link tomorrow when it starts :)

With the minor addition that there is still the option for certain (big) names to be chosen if for example they were on their way to winning but fell.

sure, but I guess there are quite a few chances something similar happens (at least in the longer distances...in the 500m that's always possible)...

if they go live, all competition times are reported on the uitslagen page I linked before...

p.s. @gianlu33

remember...you need a VPN (even a free one like Hola) in order to watch the NOS live broadcast (here in Italy, of course)...;)

...and for some, like me, Speed Skating is also the name of an event. It's not worth arguing about, it's all about personal opinion. "xx" or "XX" looks better than "Xx" or "xX". :p

meanwhile with that kind of scheme I don't know if there will be place in the team for even a single 500m only specialist (among the girls, obviously)...

Which is not really a problem. I mean, sad for them of course, but really Ter Mors is probably the only one who might have a medal shot there (meaning, on a perfect day for her).

Blokhuijsen and de Vrues? :dunno: I doubt they can win 5000m medals (what would already put NED two medals behind their 2014 tally...).

I don't know why not. Especially Blokhuijsen has shown more than once to be a very, very capable world-class 5k skater. A lot of trouble in the past years, but he's back. And with a race like today, it'd be hard for anyone to beat De Vries (the question of course is whether he will repeat this performance, but hey, it's still better than Jorrit 'if I'm selected as a reserve for the team pursuit, I'd rather not go at all!!' Bergsma. Plus, the Netherlands not being a lock-in for 2-3 medals in the 5k increases the chances for a Peter Michael stunt :cheer:

The Netherlands is not going to be anywhere it's once in a generation 2014 performance. Japan is currently the strongest nation on the women's side and will probably win 3 golds (500, 1000, 1500 and team pursuit) and the men's team, while still the best in the world, isn't as dominant as it was in 2014.

I'll go on a limb here and say that I'm going to be very surprised if the Dutch get a sweep.

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
