Luge at the Winter Olympic Games 2018

Hi,

First of all, Merry Christmas to everyone!

Would like to ask about the recent IOC decision, where more Russian athletes, among them lugers, were sanctioned:

https://www.olympic.org/news/ioc-sanctions-11-russian-athletes-as-part-of-oswald-commission-findings

- Lugers Tatyana IVANOVA and Albert DEMCHENKO, silver medallists in Sochi 2014

They have been banned from all Olympic Games subsequent to Sochi 2014. Obviously, in practice this does not affect Albert Demchenko, who is no longer active (as an athlete)

But what about Ivanova? Is she banned also from World Cup competitions subsequent to this decision, or only from Olympics?

It does affect Demchenko actually, since he's been the coach for quite a while now (at least to his daughter Viktoria, I'm not 100% sure about the entire team but he's quite often there at World Cups).

They are not banned from World Cups yet, that is up to the international federation FIL. They may or may not be banned, but if there was a World Cup competition this weekend, they'd be free to compete/be there.

Interesting, we are the first reserve in women's luge (surprise, surprise). Technically we're 2nd reserve, but Norway surely won't accept their place.

Now it will be interesting to see if Russia keeps all of their places after Ivanova's disqualifiction... I doubt they'll lose anything, but one can hope.

It looks like there will be a big argument about the British luge men,

The luge association counts Nations Cup as part of the World Cup and so believes their results are good enough to meet the standards of the British Olympic Association.

The BOA does not count the Nations Cup as part of the World Cup so will refuse to pick them for Korea,

It will go to an independent appeal  committee for a final decision

What are the criteria/qualifying standards? The way I see it, the Nations Cup is a qualifying event for the World Cup and so, strictly speaking, not part of the World Cup..

It’s the same in all sports 2x Top 67% results. But what classes as a Top 67% result varies by sport, in Cross Country it can come in the World Cup, Scandinavian Cup or Alpen Cup. In Alpine it can be in the World or Europa Cup. In Snowboard it can be in the X Games or Dew Tour.

So it does seem a very loose qualification criteria, potentially favouring some sports like Snowboard/Freestlye as they have more opportunities to achieve the Top67% result.

Wait, so a top-67% in the World Cup counts just the same as a top-67% in the Europa Cup in for example alpine skiing? That's kind of ridiculous.

Edit: Also rather off-topic I notice, this is the luge World Cup thread, not an Olympic qualification thread :p

The Appellant argues that the FIL unlawfully deprived the IFL of a qualifying place for the 2026 OWG by failing to allocate a remaining qualification place and unlawfully allocating qualification places to athletes granted Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN) status.   The ILF requests that CAS declare a failure to allocate them a qualifying place in violation of the FIL Qualification System.
