Not too surprising. Prize money at the Olympics was eventually going to happen. Hopefully, it will be the IOC that takes the initiative eventually.

This might help encourage some tennis players to take part, though 50k isn't a lot. That's around what the winner gets for a 250 event. Still better than nothing (including no ranking points).

I know this is a very heavily Americanized point of view, but they're probably looking at what's going on with the NCAA and how the athletes are starting to get their share of the money that is being made and figure that needs to start happening with the Olympics.  The days of amateurism are long gone and the prestige of winning an Olympic medal shouldn't be the only reward coming from the IOC (as opposed to payouts from the respective NOCs)

This thread provides a peak at some of the Nike sponsored uniforms for this summer.

Kenya will ditch the honeycomb look it seems.

I like the color splotch pattern for the track uniforms, but I wish they differed a bit between nation (in terms of orientation).

:USA skateboard uniforms continue to be quite different for other sports. I think these are good, but I’m interested in what the athletes think.

No more ties for gold in high jump / pole vault :P

(I don't actually think the money difference will matter, but still funny to think this will be a factor now - I'm assuming if there is a tie for gold the prize money will be split)

After all that bad press predicting disaster at Rio, it will be a bit curious if something like this happens in Paris.

I wonder if they would not do something to get a good water result in the previous days and go forward.

Back in the 1880s & 90s when the Olympic movement was formed professional athletics existed, but it was notoriously corrupt & rigged so competing as an amateur was a guarantee of honour.  These days are long gone.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
