You know what? As silly as breakdancing is at least it’s a physically challenging and unique exercise. It’s not what anyone wanted, but it’s not e-sports. It’s not an affront to sport as a whole. I mean artistic events were even held in the Olympics before, and it’s not that unlike, say, gymnastics. And it’s not a permanent event either. Having rotating ‘innovative’ events while maintaining the 25+ core disciplines (let’s not forget, these new sports are a tiny FRACTION) is a good balance to have, I think.

I would have preferred e-sports, where results are based on, well, results, instead of on being 'cool'.

ehm... don't think teenagers or people in their 20s care too much either. Also younger people tend to be "leftist" anyway.

Maybe in other countries then :d

Honestly, I doubt that. I think since forever youth has been 'against' the established stuff like rules and burocracy, but here we are, enjoying it :p

Totally agree. If anything, Olympics are now more accessible than ever, so you'd expect to have more true Olympic fans in the future...

Late teenagers or people in their 20's. The real 'kids' probably just want to see stuff they do themselves and I never see anybody breakdancing here. Also, skateboards were cool 15 or 20 years ago :p Now it's video games or, heavens forbid, watching videos of people playing video games.

Can we all stop giving IOC new ideas about new events, please.

Surely there’s some kind of moves scoring/points system in breakdancing though?

At YOG only judges preference in direct match-ups was used, so no...

Oh. That’s ridiculous, then. I thought it’d be more systemic.

I have mixed feelings. I mean, breakdance was one of the worst options they could choose, but at the other hand you can't say that bboys/bgirls are not athletes. To be a good breakdancer takes years of training. I'd prefer squash for example, but I am able to understand IOC's decision.

Also talking about new audiences, encouraging youth to Olympics, I think that adding "urban" sports could work. A lot of my friends are quite hyped about freestyle BMX, skateboard, sport climbing.

But I don't like the idea of changing few sports every Olympics. It's just not fair for the athletes. Maybe it's not a problem with baseball/softball, which doesn't need Olympics imho, but it is a problem in karate now. Some younger karatekas may dreamt about competing in Paris and then... France doesn't want it (to my surprise, they're good at karate).

However, afaik WKF and probably also WBSC would try to become core sports. I'm not sure, but it was probably Polish Karate Union who wrote, that decision about karate as a core sport would be made next year.

I am unashamed, at getting nothing done.

I think it was for the best for karate given what was done to it in 2020. At best, individual kata could have remained and expanded so that more than 10 athletes would compete.

I thought the core sports list was fixed until 2024 ?

Or are we talking about 2028 allready ?

    • I did not think it would happen again but... I created similar post for Paris - 2024 https://totallympics.com/forums/topic/27489-ain-athletes-qualification-for-paris-2024-olympic-games-and-reallocation-of-quotas-post1-updated-1507/#comments  I was not sure if that reallocations would really happen but the reality was even more serious than the expectations. According to this research 43% of the neutral statuses issued by the IFs were fake AIN  - https://razom22.com/neutrality-research/  And the figures are based on the IOC decisions - not on the evaluations by Ukrainian NOC or sport ministry. Right now the situation is absolutely unclear. As usually )) Some notes: 1. Russians will not reject quotas for 2026 as they did for 2024 in judo and wrestling. 2. AINERP may be more loyal to russians due to the new member - Watanabe. His federation issued AIN status to Melnikova who took part in the primaries of the russian ruling party, had phots with Z and e .t.c. 3. I do not expect a lot of reallocations becaues of the total small number of the rus/blr athletes in qualification events right now. 4. BUT, even with these small numbers we see that FIS allowed to compete several incompliant persons.        Short notes from the IOC statement before Paris - 2024:   1. IOC`s decisions to reject quotas are final. 2. IOC`s decisions to approve quotas are not final - new facts may lead to the rejection of invitation. 3. IOC`s decisions cannot be appealed - NOCs were not invited to the Games, so it is a good will to invite individual athletes... or not   russians Sports Athlete(s) Discipline Possible Reallocation NOC IOC Decision + IF reallocation if happened Figure skating Adeliia PETROSIAN Women's singles Stefania Yakovleva Confirmed by IOC Figure skating Petr GUMENNIK Men's singles Davide Lewton Brain Confirmed by IOC belorussians     Sports Athlete(s) Discipline Possible Reallocation NOC IOC Decision + IF reallocation if happened Figure skating Viktoriya SAFONOVA Women's singles Stefania Yakovleva Confirmed by IOC
