When Americans don't win gold medals they always have to blame outside influence, not themselves.

Sun Yang isn't here yet they don't blame Dean & Scott for taking away their medals at this distance?

Efimova isn't taking away medals so now it's Rylov who has to be on doping, right? How convenient

Or maybe they should blame Hafnaoui who also had the nerve to take away one of the US gold medals in 400 free. He must be on doping, right?

America only loses when someone else is cheating. Ho-hum! Someone needs to tell Ryan Murphy he's not Ryan Lochte :p

Efimova has tested positive twice so she is well and truly proved to be a doper.

But the issue here is why Russia as a country should be banned from these Games not whether Efirmova should start. And Efimova is so irrelevant these days I presume even US swimmers don't mind she's here. After all, she is not taking away any medals from them :p

Since Justin Gatlin was allowed to take part in Rio Games as a repeated doping offender and only a hamstring injury prevented him from making Tokyo I feel like Ryan Murphy is barking at the wrong tree to begin with.

Lily King famously condemned Gatlin as well.

And Russia should be banned because they committed state sponsored doping and every whistleblower and Anti doping organisation in the world recommend  a total ban - but the IOC and CAS disagree with that.

Efirmova appeared in the relay and while it is unlikely they will beat the Americans in that one things might explode if they do in any of the three finals.

Lily King doesn't run the USTF. USA speaks high morals when accusing Russians of all the doping evil yet they allow Justin Gatlin to compete and enjoy Nike sponsorship like he's a perfect role model or something. This is a hypocrisy of the highest order. I will always point this out and indicate how two-faced Ryan Murphy's sound like now.

USTF couldn’t legally ban Gatlin even if they tried. He would simply sue and win - CAS has made it clear governing bodies cannot ban athletes if they doping bans have expired. Blame CAS and The IOC because the IOC are only people who could put in place a rule that sees a lifetime ban from competiting for all dopers and get CAS to agree to it.

USTF selected Gatlin to compete so they share the blame. The "it's all IOC fault" excuse doesnt hold ground. Somehow USTF didn't let Sha'Cari Richardson to compete in Tokyo (in the relay) so it shows they can shut someone down IF they only want to.

They couldn’t select her for the relay without breaking their own rules that say the only those who run in the final can be selected. As her result was annulled she didn’t.

Who can stop USTF from changing their OWN rules? The IOC? :p This is a complete technicality some lawyers make money from but casual sport fans deserve better than that. Whenever there's a will, there's a way.

The American Courts. The Main reason  USTF has that trial format is because America is litigation mad and it would all end in frequent court battles.

Those trials would end in out of court settlements anyway especially if an athlete who sues USTF would be suspended during a course of such trial (which makes sense since USTF would be treated as employer - isn't that what Jess Varnish argued vs British Cycling in the UK trial?).

Plus Nike (or any other sponsor) would probably pay enough money under the table for those #5 & #6 relay hopefuls so they don't file a case and block Richardson's place in the relay. Most things in USA usually come down to money in the end.

    • Spring Nationals, Day #3   Sara Curtis MVP of day 3 of the Italian Spring Nationals!    after improving her PB in the women's 100m freestyle already in the morning heats, in the afternoon final she destroyed not only her previous limit, but also the 9-year old National Record, previously held by our swimming icon Federica Pellegrini 53.01 is the new record   in the same race, Emma Virginia Menicucci was 2nd in 54.14 (big new PB for her) and Chiara Tarantino was 3rd in 54.28   given that Tarantino has a sub-54 PB and also Sofia Morini (here completely out of shape) is a sub-54 swimmer at her best, now the Italian women's 4*100m free relay begins to look like a good one (sure, USA and AUS are out of reach, but the rest of the world is not so far away anymore   more on Today's Finals:   men's 800m Free: 1.Davide Marchello, 7.53.32   women's 200m IM: 1.Sara Franceschi, 2.10.95; 2.Anita Gastaldi, 2.10.97 (PB), both World qualifying times   men's 200m IM: 1.Alberto Razzetti, 1.58.05 (again definitely below the expectations, something's not good with him this week ); 2.Christian Mantegazza, 1.58.95 (big PB, class of 2005)   men's 100m Free: 1.Manuel Frigo, 48.34; 2.Carlos D'Ambrosio, 48.60 (very disappointed with him...he should have swum 1 second faster); 3.Lorenzo Zazzeri, 48.62; 4.Alessandro Miressi, 48.74  even if we can add Ceccon and maybe Deplano (if he convince himself he can swim fast also the 100m and not only the 50m), the 4*100m relay's perspective is really depressing    women's 1500m Free: 1.Simona Quadarella, 16.03.77   in the club relays (the 4*100m medley relays), among the women, Sara Curtis swam "only" 1.01 in the backstroke leg, Bottazzo had a good 1.05.40 in the breastroke leg, confirming his win over the individual distance wasn't a fluke and Tarantino (53.68) and Menicucci (54.11) confirmed the value of their clockings from the individual race also with the flying start among the men, Bacico swam even better than the individual race winning effort (53.42) in the backstroke leg, Martinenghi edged out Viberti in the breastroke leg (58.70 to 58.99), Burdisso swam a decent 50.8 in the fly leg and finally Manuel Frigo confirmed himself the best 100m free specialist of the moment with an impressive 47.2 stint
