hckošice 13,267 Posted June 17, 2022 #125 Share Posted June 17, 2022 17th June, Today it is exactly 60 years since the last Slovak (and Czech ) players played the FIFA Football World Cup final In 1962, when Czechoslovak national team was heading to Chile there were not a lot of expectations nor hype in the country, people were rather criticizing and mocking the players, sentences like "Just withdrew and do not go make shame there" were the most frequent... but the team under coach Vytlačil completely shocked the whole football planet already in the opening match beating 1:0 Spain by a goal of Jozef Štibrányi and shut-out of the elected best goalkeepr of the tournament Viliam Schrojf, 2 of the 9 Slovak players of the team and started a completely sci-fi-fairytale journey which ended by a lost Gold medal match to in Estadio Nacional the 17th June 1962. After 15 minutes they were even leading the final 1-0 the moral of the story.... When the players returned home, a overcrowded airport with tens of thousands fans were awaiting them. and the beloved Comunist party leading the country awarded the players by a public praise for the excellent representation of the socialist homeland a full week vacation in Yugoslavia and 5000 Czechoslovak crowns bonus for the players (which was the prize of a TV at that time here )

Monzanator 3,598 Posted July 19, 2022 #128 Share Posted July 19, 2022 Lella Lomabrdi ahead of her F1 Grand Prix debut in Kyalami 1975 (she beat Wilson Fittipaldi by 0,05 to make the grid). Still the last woman who qualified for a Formula 1 Grand Prix (and one of only two of five who managed to do that). De_Gambassi

dcro 10,182 Posted August 4, 2022 #130 Share Posted August 4, 2022 1982 World Championships in Lausanne were a swan song for the legendary powerhouse that was Granat. Swiss organizers tweaked some rules to help them out, but Christine Stueckelberger & then 17-year old Granat nevertheless ended up with an individual silver. #banbestmen
