If it is only 2 countries going down then it is clear, otherwise will be huge fight between rank 5-10.

on the top Hungary safe. Slovakia probably as well, which is for me the biggest surprise. Probably it will be between Slovenia and Lithuania

I think it might be between Slovakia and Lithuania actually, as Slovenia might probably overtake both, since they have a promising day 2 with some good athletes.

We are soooooo staying in the 2nd league this year. Seeing as our second day is always worse than the first, our relay got DQ'd and Palšytė won't be jumping for us tomorrow.

Yeah... Looking at some of Lithuanian entries for the second day... Last place is almost guaranteed in women's hammer throw for example. :p

It will be interesting. We have few athletes for top 3 (Terzic, Ristic, Jevtic), Barjaktarovic for top 5 and maybe Gardasevic in long jump. Others are just bad.

So we don't have a proper start list for quite a few events, but this is prediction of SB/PB combination how standings should look like after most events are finished, except M 110m Hurdles, M Javelin and Relays.

  • :HUN 322
  • :SVK 270,5
  • :LTU 265
  • :SLO 255
  • :ISR 239
  • :AUT 231
  • :LAT 223
  • :CYP 226
  • :CRO 223
  • :SRB 211
  • :ISL 173
  • :MDA 166

Iceland and Moldova is relegated for sure. Hungary secured promotion while Slovakia will be 2nd for almost sure. The only battle that should continue is Lithuania vs Slovenia for the last qualification spot.

Lithuania should beat Slovenia in: Men's Triple Jump, Women's Shot Put, Men's Discus Throw, Men's 3000m Steeplechase, Women's 200m, Women's 1500m, Men's 3000m

Slovenia should beat Lithuania in: Women's Hammer Throw, Men's Pole Vault, Women's 100m Hurdles, Men's 800m, Women's High Jump (how lucky they are that Palšytė is injured...), Men's 200m, Women's long jump, Women's 5000m.

There are several game changing events where both countries can surprise each other as athletes are quite close in comparison: Women's 100m Hurdles, Men's 800m, Women's 200m, Women's Long Jump, Men's 3000m. The qualification will depend on these events in particular. Also need to keep in mind that our Men's Relay team are likely to finish last :d

Everyone here is still so assured about our promotion lol, but guys, the our yesterdays results should be considered as miracles and it´s just highly unlikely we will repeat such performances today. We still can perfectly finish last,

I really don´t understand where you took this certitude. I see only 1 quite probable good result (to not say win) today by Volko in 200m, I have strong doubts that anyone else will finish in the top half of their races :d

I think Slovakia is also a quite probable winner in women's long jump and women's 4x400m relay. :d

Claudia Salman-Rath (LJ) is another victim of unprofessional judging in Lille. Her foot wasn't even close to the foul line  and yet they gave her "X".

In first league, the wind is causing havoc particularly in the women's long jump.... the Swedish girl registered a no jump in the second round with a -9.3 m/s (:yikes:) headwind while the Estonian girl had a +3.2 m/s wind at her back .

    • The USA has a hybrid selection model -- Jordan Stolz, Erin Jackson, maybe a couple of others -- prequalified through World Championships and World Cup results even though they will still skate at trials. It was different four years ago when Jackson tripped in the 500 at trials, finished one spot out of the team and Brittany Bowe gave up her spot for Jackson (though Bowe's best events were the 1000 and 1500 and it was believed anyway the US would get an extra 500 quota on reallocation, which they later did, so Bowe was able to skate the 500 in Beijing anyway).

    • Yep, it is insane, although I was a little annoyed by Mark Tuitert saying this is 'unique in the Netherlands, unique in sports even' - no it's literally not unique in sports     But the tension....unbelievable. I'm noticing I feel the tension even worse now that we're in the middle of our own Olympic qualifying process here, it makes the trials both more and less fun to watch  And I find it harder to sympathize with athletes like Beune, who miss out on a distance but not on the Olympics, then on athletes who miss out on the Olympics althogether...
    • My personally favourite system would be something where there is a certain set of high criteria to be pre-selected (like winning at least all but one of the World Cups in a certain distance before the trials), which would really only pre-select the absolute top - disadvantage is that you're somewhat forcing them to be in peak shape for one and a half month or so, which isn't good for Olympic performance, although they can choose to go for the trials of course. Rest of the spots would then be done by trials.   That too would have it's drawbacks though. Focus on the World Cup qualifiers would be almost the same as it is for trials now, as one would need to qualify to have a chance of being pre-selected.
    • Fabris was better in the years after the Olympics than in the years before.
    • There is no 'NED men's team'     I mean, there is a national coach, but it's not really like a national team, more of a collective of riders from different teams who happen to suit up in the same orange during international races. But yes, the 'coach' (more like manager of the team I think, he certainly isn't actually training athletes) of the national team is Rintje Ritsma, the blond guy. Not Gerard van Velde, who you refer to with the 1000m gold  (who is also a coach nowadays)

    • Listening to the interviews the past four days, it’s clear just how stressfull the OKT is. Even for someone like De Boo, who is clearly our best sprinter, or Nuijs, in his 5th OKT.
    • For me, a system with pre-nomination only works when you only have a few stars. Of course you want to protect them. In case of yesterday’s 1500. The World champion did not qualify, but the three women would did are all capable of winning a medal and have skated faster than Beune ever did in Heerenveen. So why should Beune be protected.   If we would return to that system the pressure would just be moved to the World Cup qualifiers. Miss out there, and your chances of the Olympics are hugely diminished. We had a system like that in the past, which in some cases meant that skaters who had their peak earlier in the season, or even in the previous season, but had lost their form by the time that the Games came along, were nominated. That system could well mean some newbie like van der Bunt misses out.   With other Words, there is no system that 100% guarantees a perfect outcome.
