Yeah, this is just ridiculous. It makes even less sense than the boycotts of the 80s Olympics. There are many ways to be helpful of the cause, and this isn't one of them.

I'm sure this is a tournament decision, because the european players were going to play and they don't want byes for the TV contracts.

Tennis is a rich man's sport. No way they will cancel the whole tournament or US Open for that matter. It's one sport - especially for women - when there is a ton of money to be lost. Nobody profits from cancelling matches so this one day deal is only an excuse which is good.

Oh man, can you believe if the US Open is actually cancelled, because of this, after all the fuss about Covid measures they had for the past months. :d It's not happening of course, but imagine those 300 players depending on the Grand Slam check, after not playing for half a year. I am sure they are going to have a political stand too. :d

Serena Williams is still on the Margaret Court GS record chase. Cancelling USO would make her extremely upset IMO :p

Unlike MLB or NBA there is no guaranteed money in tennis. You make what you earn on the court (and you have to pay your trainers, medica staff etc.). That's why boycotting the season isn't really an option, it's an individual sport where you are truly on your own out there and let's face it, you can make a solid living if you're in the Top 100-150 and then it goes truly downhill if you are ranked outside 200. Then it's about earning every penny on the ITF 25k circuit. Making a political statement is cool but only if you can afford it. Otherwise reality bites you hard.

I really hate sports involving politics. Quiting/boycott doesn't make any difference to the racism/world peace whatever. It just makes you feel good like a saint. As a professional player why not playing professionally and protest when you are off court. Doing harm to the struggling WTA/ATP and US open doesn't help the racism at all.

Especially when you consider Osaka was booed like crazy back in the USO final. Somehow the political crusade morons didn't consider that racist at all

    • As a Montreal Canadien fan, I am in agreement. However, he is struggling recently and is demoted to the 4th line this week. Hoping he can turn it around.
    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the general coach position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece but they results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands, because we don't have such resources and money but I think we can repeat the Romanian results (2 gold - 3 silver in Paris) and that will be a much better result than the 2 silver in this year.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?
