QUALIFICATION UPDATE

Mark English did it!! He is on the plane to Tokyo after running 1:44.71 mins over 800m in Spain this evening! Phew! He gets the A standard just in the nick of time :d. But not only that, he broke the long-standing Irish record for the men's 800m which has stood since 1995. Congrats Mark

That means we now have secured 102 athlete quotas (55 men and 47 women) with representatives in 58 events, across 20 different sports.

QUALIFICATION UPDATE

It's been a busy day of updates in terms of Olympic qualification with World Athletics revealing the list of athletes qualified to the Olympics by ranking, the IGF releasing the list of qualified women for the Olympic golf tournament and with the announcement of the Irish men's road cycling team.

Starting with road cycling, Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin and Eddie Dunbar have been selected to represent the country in the men's road race with Roche going also in the men's individual time-trial. It will be Roche's 4th Olympic Games!

However, in terms of new quotas, Ireland has earned 11 more quotas in athletics after the world rankings list was finalised overnight.

Although this does not yet mean that Athletics Ireland or the Olympic Federation of Ireland will nominate all of those athletes, for the purposes of this tracker I am counting them as earned quotas at this moment in time. I will only count 10 additional quotas since Phil Healy will almost certainly take part in the mixed relay event. This brings the number of athletics qualifiers to 25 and puts athletics at the top of the table in terms of Irish qualifiers by sport for the Olympic Games.

The IGF also revealed the list of women qualified to the Olympics after the qualifying period came to an end. Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow (26th and 38th respectively in the Olympic qualifying list) have both earned a quota place and both look set to represent Ireland at the Games for a second time!

That means we now have secured 114 athlete quotas (59 men and 55 women) with representatives in 65 events, across 20 different sports.

* Ireland is awarded 4 quotas for the Mixed 4x400m Relay. It is almost certain that the relay squad will contain Phil Healy who is already qualified in the Women's 200m and 400m. Therefore, for the purposes of being as accurate as possible, I am only counting 3 new additional quotas to fill the relay squad.

Athletics Ireland have nominated Leon Reid too.  That needs to be confirmed too

Then we're just waiting on relay teams, the rugby team and the shooter to be named

Oh and any last minute miracle reallocations

I presume the  Medley Relay appeal has gone nowhere?

    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto is happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps ( and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it is already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
    • Tadeucci was very good and took bronze
    • On the Olympics I don't like to count golds to analyse the performance, I think the best data are the top8 and medals. In both fields I expect a big improvement (obviously not on the 'pure' number, but on the percentage of medal or top8 events)
