Your favorite moments at the Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026

Recommended Posts

NBC had a lovely special after the ceremony...even highlighted some non-USA athletes.  Perhaps a few Americans will know Klaebo's name now!  There was even a segment highlighting the Italian medallists, that this was a record year for them, too.  :) (Best of Milan Cortina, on Peacock, if you can access it.)

From a :USA perspective:

Elana Meyers Taylor winning monobob, Alysa Liu winning women's figure skating, Shiffrin winning women's slalom & both our hockey teams winning gold

From an international perspective:

:NOR Klaebo dominating cross country skiing events

:KAZ Shaidorov winning men's figure skating

:SUI Franjo von Allmen dominating men's alpine skiing

:CAN Kingsbury winning gold in dual moguls

:NED Netherlands dominating short track now??!?!?!

:BRA Lucas winning gold for Brasil and South America

In reality, all the athletes are winners for sacrificing so much to participate in these Olympics. What an incredible games full of unpredictable and inspiring moments!

Now that I've had half a day to recover from the traumatic hockey loss, I can answer this question better:

Favourite Moments from Canadian Athletes (not many but they still exist)

  • The Cross-Country skiing team delivering great performance after great performance and giving hope for a Canadian renaissance in the sport
  • Rachel Homan finally overcoming her Olympic demons and winning a medal in curling
  • Mikael Kingsbury winning the first dual moguls Olympic gold medal at capping his career with an Olympic gold
  • Megan Oldham winning gold in freeski big air
  • Seeing the emergence of Stephen Gogolev in men's figure skating
  • Deanna Stellato-Dudek finally getting to live out her Olympic dream at 42 years old when it looked like it wouldn't be the case after an injury in a practice session
  • Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier finally getting an Olympic medal in Ice Dance
  • Courtney Sarault winning 4 medals after winning no medals in 2022 and almost quitting the sport in 2023
  • Laurent Dubreuil finally winning a medal in the 500m
  • Valerie Maltais (at 35 years old) turning back the clock and having a career year winning 3 Olympic medals in speed skating
  • Women's Team Pursuit winning back-to-back gold medals

Favourite Moments from International Athletes:

  • :BRA Lucas Pinheiro Braathen winning gold in the men's giant slalom
  • :NOR Johan-Olav Botn dedicating his win to Sivert Guttorm Bakken
  • :ITA Federica Brignone overcoming injury and winning 2 gold medals
  • :ITA Lisa Vittozzi winning biathlon gold on home soil
  • :BUL Seeing the incredible Bulgarian performances in biathlon
  • :USA Elana Meyers Taylor finally winning Olympic gold
  • :NOR Klaebo dominance
  • Nazgul the dog
  • :KAZ Mikhail Shaidorov winning gold in men's figure skating
  • :USA Alysa Liu winning gold after retiring from the sport in 2022
  • Men's Freeski big air final
  • Seeing the emergence of :POL Kacper Tomasiak in ski jumping
  • The parallel giant slalom events
  • :KOR Choi Ga-on winning halfpipe gold after a scary injury on her 1st run
  • Even though it wasn't the result I wanted, the men's snowboard cross final had a thrilling finish
  • :ITA Francesca Lollobrigida stunning everyone with gold in the women's 3000m and 5000m
  • In general, seeing all the countries that hadn't won a Winter Olympic medal ever or in a long time win a medal at these Games

The best part of last nights closing ceremony was the highlight montage Eurosport made.

Anyone who didn't see it NEEDS to see it. Amazing.   Probably my second favourite montage of an OG after the London one in 2012.

    • It's somewhat surprising that figure skating isn't more popular here.
    • I'm not against team events or even mixed team events, but I think they need to be more than the sum of individual performances. So relays are fine (including team event in luge), team pursuit too, team event in skeleton is ok cause you have this different type of start though I would prefer the luge system (with a chip instead of this board you definitely can't touch in skeleton ?). Rest needs to be rethought at least. And rules need to be coherent between the sports regarding how many teams you can enter, why is it 4 duos in alpine combined event and only 1 in CC team sprint ? 2 would be my limit for dual events, even in sports where they usually don't enter more than one team in WC events.    Alpine skiing (10)   No changes.   Biathlon (11 -> 9)   - Mixed relay + Single mixed relay. Agree with De_Gambassi, different format from the gender relays, increased chances for weaker nations to compete even if we would have two teams for some countries. - Both pursuits. I've seen several people complain about how tired the athletes were by the end of the Games during the mass-starts. Thing is these are the same people that are adamant on keeping the pursuit in the program. Either ditch them or treat the sprint as a qualification round. You would then have one individual races, one MS and one "exciting" double-event.   Bobsleigh (4)   No changes. Max 2 teams per country.   Cross-country skiing (12 -> 11)   - Both team sprints. + Mixed team sprint.  Same idea as in biathlon. Like some I'm all for a real sprint and not the dull attrition races we witnessed in Val di Fiemme. Freestyle is mandatory, can be uphill/downhill but not longer than 1'30.  - 50km W + 30km W   Curling (3)     No changes.     Figure skating (5 -> 3)   - Team event.  Awful ranking system. - Ice dance.  "Dance", enough said.   Freestyle skiing (15)   - Team aerials. + Ski-cross mixed event. Ideally luge-like with immediate start after your teammate crossed the finish line. Alternate M-W order between the rounds. In snowboard cross men were almost useless all day long.   Ice hockey (2)   No changes.   Luge (6)   No changes.   Nordic combined (3 -> 4)   + Gundersen NH W - Gundersen NH M + Mass-start LH M - Team event + Mixed team event   Short-track speed skating (9)   No changes.   Skeleton (3)    No changes.   Ski jumping (6 -> 5)   - Super team M   Ski mountaineering (3)   - Both sprints + Both individuals   Snowboarding (11)   No changes.   Speed skating (14)   - Mass-start in the current format is shite + (Re)introduce an allround competition inspired by track cycling's omnium (first version). So a couple of individual races (500 and 3000 ?), an elimination race, a points races to end it.  (-) This would be endurance based so maybe ditch 3000/5000.
    • Worth noting that these Olympics, there were separate qualification and event threads where as in the past, they were merged together in one thread so that makes the increase in replies even more impressive.
    • The best part of last nights closing ceremony was the highlight montage Eurosport made.   Anyone who didn't see it NEEDS to see it. Amazing.   Probably my second favourite montage of an OG after the London one in 2012.
    • After our first ever Olympic medal, it's time for our first Paralympic medal.  The chances are good, but I'm traumatized by the Chinese after 2022.    I'm also concerned about the atmosphere of these games.
    • no, there was a world cup stage also the following year, then the track was dismissed and the hall reverted back to its usual tasks (not sport related)
