Totallympics Annual International Song Contest 2025

I've been under the weather for much of the week, so sadly I had to pass on voting this time around. I'll still commenting and following, of course.

May I introduce you to this gem?

Totally instrumental, but it's a huge part of my Christmas festivities. Despite the name, Trans-Siberian Orchestra is from Tampa, FL

I heard their singer at my last cruise :D

Not religious, but I do celebrate Christmas because it's the time of excessive and delicious meals :cheer:

I can't really think of any Dutch Christmas songs though, basically we hear Mariah Carey and WHAM! half the day and a collection of others the other half of the day

.

Eenzame Kerst - André Hazes (not my cup of tea)

Well. A lot of the music played in Denmark for Christmas is the same as most others (at least Western countries)

But I would say that most Danish Christmas music goes into one of three categories.

All three have plenty of different songs, but I put out some personal favourites

The old songs, mainly religious ones. Some have been made into more modern versions.

For this I pick Gasolin's version of Dejlig er Jorden, an old hymn of which the Danish text is from 1850:

Spoiler

Lovely is the earth,

glorious is the heaven of God,

beautiful is the pilgrimage of souls!

Through the beautiful

kingdoms on earth

we go to paradise with song!

Eras will come,

Eras will fade,

Generations will follow the course of generations;

never will

the tone from the sky silence

in the happy pilgrim song of the soul.

The angels sang it

first for the shepherds of the field,

beautifully from soul to soul it sounded:

Peace on earth!

Man, rejoice,

to us is today a saviour born!

The second is the more funny or sarcastic songs. Making fun of Christmas. An older one of these is Jul, det Cool, a rather funny "anti-christmas song"

The third category is from the annual TV advent calendars whose theme songs very often become part of the christmas playlists.

These include both advent calendars made for the families and some more "grown up" versions

Lille Store Verden from the family calendar Juleønsket (The Christmas wish) in 2015

And from the "Grown up" calendar Jul på Vesterbro
