Less than inspiring results from the first leg of the 2025/26 Rugby Sevens.

:GBR Men finish in 7th place after defeats to :NZL (21-14) and :AUS (26-17). On the upside, they did defeat :ESP (14-10) in the pool match. In the 5th place semi-final, they were crushed by :RSA (34-0). They finished up with a 24-19 win over :ARG

On the women's side, :GBR went down to defeats against :CAN (41-5), :JPN (36-5) and :AUS (55-0). In the 5th place semifinal, they then lost out to :USA (49-14) before finishing the day with another loss, this time against :FRA (46-5). Needless to say, they finish the tournament in last place.

The tour continues next week in Cape Town :RSA.

Not really sure that there's much hope for better things for 7s in this country, even with Scotland pushing it a bit.

There are enough potential professional 15s contracts for half decent British players which means they are all unavailable and those that are left aren't good enough or would rather do something else. Maybe they should just pick the U20s and sell it to the clubs and players as a development thing? I guess that might be why Scotland added it to their 'pathway' but that's a small pool to pick from.

2nd leg of the 25/26 HSBC Rugby SVNS completed in Cape Town

Starting with the women's side - they've now gone two tournaments without winning a single match. In fact, they haven't even been close to winning any of their matches so far. In the pool, they started with a 38-10 defeat to :NZL, before being drubbed 40-0 by :FIJ before finishing with a 31-17 loss to :USA. In the 5th place semi, they lost to :JPN 25-7 and finally, :FIJ condemned them to last place (again) with a 43-7 defeat.

The men had a better tournament. In the pool, it was a 29-12 loss against :NZL, followed by a 21-17 loss to :FIJ and finally a bruising 41-7 loss to :RSA. In the 5th place semi, :GBR recorded their sole win of the weekend with a 29-10 win over :ESP. In the end GB finish in 6th place after a losing out to :NZL 27-12.

Not a lot to be said about the women's side. With :FRA the only other European nation, it's difficult to know where the :GBR team stand. On the men's side, GB have faced :ESP twice now and won on both occasions. So, from a European perspective, :FRA remains the top nation and assuming they will qualify through the SVNS series, GB could still be in the mix for the European quota.

Draw for Singapore stop in the HSBC Rugby SVNS is out.

For the men, :GBR will face off against :RSA:FIJ and :ESP. So far this season, Spain is the only country that GB have managed to record victory over so the chances are GB are looking at another 7th or 8th place finish.

On the women's side, :GBR remain winless this season. In Singapore they will face off against :NZL:FRA and :CAN. Nothing suggests that GB will break their duck in any of those games.

The groups have been announced for the 2026 Flag Football World Championship which is due to be held in Dusseldorf from 13-16 August.

The :GBR women are the current European Champions and will be up against :AUT, :FRA and :CHN. The match against Austria will be interesting as it is a repeat of the 2025 European final.

For the men, they are in group with :ITA:FRA and :PAN

Another set of disappointing result from :SGP leg of Rugby Sevens.

The :GBR men finished bottom of their pool after defeats to :FIJ (22-19) and :RSA (33-12). Their 29-14 defeat at the hands of :ESP probably the most disappointing given they are likely to be key competition for European quota place and they had defeated them in both of the previous 2 legs.

:GBR will face :AUS in the 5th place semifinals tomorrow.

The :GBR women continue to have an absolute shocker of a series. They haven't won a single match in the series so far and it doesn't look like they are going to break that this weekend. They were absolutely destroyed by :NZL 64-0. They did at least manage to score against :FRA but still went down to a 32-5 defeat. Things didn't get any better in their final pool match as they lost 52-0 to :CAN.

:GBR will face :FIJ in the 5th place semifinal - so think we are likely to chalk up another loss

    • The tournament is over for Mathilde Fantin – unfortunately, a big loss for the Italy. Tomorrow we play a semifinal against France – if we win, we'll have a grand final against Hungary on Friday. Everything will be clear then, bacouse the final match against China should be a formality. In any case, we've already achieved our best result ever in our history, or at worst scenario – 3rd place in Division 1A.

    • Super runner, good guy, sadly never entirely recovered from ripping his leg to shreds in the act of going sub 10, but as you say a key relay man for the better part of a decade, and a European and World Champion, and a reminder that talent doesn't always come in obvious looking boxes -a breakthrough sprint athlete for many of middle eastern and north african heritage.

    • Duno. To me the most interesting question is the short term is whether Poilievre survives this or not. It will be tough for him to justify his leadership.
    • Wonder if they'll get a couple more floor crossers to strengthen their majority.
