In Italy yesterday, the same thing happened with Vinatzer in alpine skiing. Unfortunately, the Olympics are a time when "Sunday fans" are show up and such people can be terrible when someone lose. In 2021, during the Tokyo Games, Paola Egonu also experienced enormous hate from such people.

Only Sara Takanashi's second medal.  She was the biggest name in Women's ski jumping before it became an Olympic sport, but has never won much at the Olymoucs.

She was visibly very emotional after as well. She was one of the jumper to have a jump disqualified due to suit issues in Beijing, which cost Japan a medal, so this probably felt like a big weight off her shoulders.

This is reprehensible

Something even more puzzling and something I will never understand when said hate speech coming after someone _wins_. I read somewhere that in S Korea a 3x gold medallist female archery competitor was systematically bullied on social media after the OG (don't remember which, might be Tokyo) because she competed with short hair (????!).

@pdr4332She received some vulgar private messages on social media. Typical offspring of modern society and sadly Beltowska was very poor on this hill and the main reason why Poland finished so far down. The original problem was firing Bachleda as women's coach after Seefeld champs to hire Malysz's lapdog buddy Kruczek who dragged the team down. But Malysz is a saint among journalists so he escaped criticism and sexist approach for years (he famously said ski jumping is for men only) and years have been wasted. Bachleda was finally brought back again alas Rajda and Karpiel retired (the latter actually came back last year) and we are stuck (Konderla also tailed off so as poor as Beltowska is, she's actually our #2 female jumper).

One of the biggest names.  Sarah Hendrickson was the World Champion in 2013, defeating Sara Takanashi.  Then she suffered a serious knee injury months before the 2014 Olympics and she was never the same afterwards.

Is also to.do.with sports gambling.  When people lose money they blame the athlete.

Not only that. Some people react to life's failures this way. They gain self-esteem through success, but take it out on others after failure. The era before social media was certainly better for athletes, politicians, and so on. There was only television, and essentially only face-to-face interaction was possible, something not everyone is brave enough to do in real life. 99% of these haters in real life would be afraid to approach Bełtowska on the street and say something bad to her.
