Well, looking at the last 5 world championships:

 

Netherlands won 6 gold medals in 2021.

South Korea won 5 gold medals in 2022, while the Netherlands won only 1.

Netherlands won 5 in 2023, and Korea only 2.

China won 4 gold medals in 2024, while the Netherlands won only 1.

Canada won 6 gold medals, while China won no gold medals in 2025.

 

I think expecting too much from a sport as unpredictable as this is a bit risky.

That was one skate for Malinin. It's a dozen now for Canada.

Today was really beautiful actually, reminds me of the nice late winter days we sometimes get in Seattle. Kinda baffled I saw some people wearing winter coats. Only reason I wasn’t wearing shorts and a T shirt is because I knew it was gonna get colder tonight.

It is one tournament though. Firing a coach now, when a year ago in the world championships they destroyed everyone (assuming he was the coach then already), would just be overreacting and creating instability. That is not going to help them in the long run, at all.

 

I'm happy Niels Kerstholt remained for the Dutch, despite a lot of criticism and calls for him to be kicked out early on.

Actually, the sports we're good at just weren't in the Olympics yet. Short track, curling, snowboard, freeski, and a bunch of women's events (women's hockey, and NHLers in hockey for that matter). If you go back and look, we'd still struggle to get 5 medals if the WOG only included the sports from 1988. 

 

Of course we're still struggling now. We're no longer a winter sport power.
