The Canadian sports system is in crisis. The government doesn't seem to care and invest in sport.

Oh jeepers, the last increase in funding from the government was in 2005...

We have gone through both liberal and conservative governments. Clearly no one wants to fund. The solution is presented too, provide sport gambling revenue to funding amateur sport.

With the election and Sport Canada not finishing its "Future of Sport" study, national federations have had to cut back drastically in case of revving future reduced funding. For ex. All Wrestling Canada athletes are now self funded for tournaments.

I did an analysis of Own the Podium funding for Summer sports from the Paris triennial versus the current funding level:

Some notes:

  • The 2024-2025 funding represents year 1 of 4 for the LA2028 cycle
  • Overall funding average has gone down from the average of the three Paris years
  • Why is breaking being funded?
  • Not surprising, Cycling and Rowing with the biggest drops in average. The biggest increases are to the Men's field hockey and Women's volleyball teams, which imo have no chance of medaling in LA
  • Badminton, Modern pentathlon, Sport climbing, Surfing and Table tennis are the core Olympic sports without any funding for this cycle

It's too bad OTP never realligned their focus when it was continued after 2010. They have such a backward facing funding formula. It was one thing when when it started, cause it was only like 5 years out from Vancouver, at when looking to maximize medals over such a short term funding like that makes sense (to a point anyway, some of the decisions still seem to be highly political, but I digress)... but when it was continued after they should have became more forward facing and investing in sports with better potential ROI

That's an interesting goal since no other nation does this. It'll also be quite difficult to achieve. Over the next summer and winter games we may get 55-60 combined medals. The United States and China easily surpasses that from summer alone. Great Britain despite being weak in the winter could also achieve this. Germany's strength in both games will likely have them ahead of Canada. After that nations like France, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands do well enough in the winter that they may hold onto their lead over Canada. Plus when Russia returns they are practically guaranteed to finish ahead of Canada in the combined medal table.

Here's what the combined medal total for 2022/2024 looks like

1. :USA - 151

2. :CHN - 106

3. :FRA - 78

4. :GBR - 67

5. :JPN - 63

6. :GER - 60

7. :AUS - 57

8. :ITA - 57

9. :CAN - 53

10. :NED - 51

France is a bit inflated since they hosted 2024. I forgot to mention Australia is in the same boat as Great Britain where if they have a good Summer games they could out earn us.
