Swimming Discussion | Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Road to LA 2028

As a Canadian, Yu Zidi is already starting to terrify me. She'll be 15 in 2028 and who knows how fast she'll be going then.

12-Yr-Old :CHN Yu Zidi Crushes 2:10.63 In Women’s 200 IM At Chinese Nationals

Yesterday, we reported that 12-year-old Yu Zidi set a new lifetime best of 2:12.52 in the women’s 200m IM semi-final at the 2025 Chinese National Championships.

Well, buckle up because the youngster just destroyed that already other worldly swim with a new personal best of 2:10.63.

For perspective, Yu’s previous swim obliterated the current U.S. National Age Group Records for girls and boys.

Teagan O’Dell owns the girls’ NAG at 2:18.69 while Richard Poplawski owns the boys in 2:13.59.

Flash forward to tonight and Yu split 27.47/32.98/39.44/30.74 to earn silver behind winner Yu Yiting who grabbed gold in 2:08.67.

Yu easily cleared the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 2:12.83 needed to qualify for the World Championships.

She now ranks 14th in the world on the season.

I’m sorry, but there’s no way she’s not either overtraining (edit: and crash out in the next 2-3 years) or doping. I mean crushing the boy’s NAG by 3 seconds as a girl? No female swimmer can be that good. Way too suspicious. :mumble::dunno:

Or her age is not accurate.

She apparently knocked out a 2:08 in the SFs of the 200 fly.

I genuinely hope there's nothing nefarious here and that she's treated well by the coaching, for her sake as much as anything.

Yu Zidi:d:CHN, a 12-year-old Chinese swimmer, sets 200m record

Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi, 12, has been labelled a “sensation” after setting the fastest ever time by male or female in that age group in the 200m individual medley at China’s national championships.

Yu’s 2:10.63 time saw her finish second in the event, won by 2024 Olympic finalist Yu Yuting, and could see her included in China’s swimming squad for this year’s World Championships in Singapore, which will be staged in July and August.

So she went 2:06.83 in the 200m butterfly final!!!

Also went 1:58.03 in the 200m freestyle leading off a relay.

At this rate, she's going to make Summer McIntosh look like an age group swimmer in a few years.

Especially in China one would be less surprised if she is being extremely overtrained to possibly score as much as possible before her body starts to change significantly. China is definitely not one of those countries where they gradually build up their talents into full-fledged pros I'd guess, not a surprise some countries often have way more teenage superstars than others :p
