:CUB Omara Durand

PARA ATHLETICS

Widely regarded as one of the best T12 (visually impaired) sprinters of all time, Omara Durand retired after the 2024 Paralympics with a impressive haul of titles competing in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. After making her debut at the 2008 Games, Durand did not lose a single final from 2011 to 2024 – amassing a total of 11 gold medals at the Paralympics, 14 World Championships and 12 Pan American Games wins. As the current world record holder in all three events she competed in, Durand leaves the Para Athletics world celebrated not only for her achievements, but also as a influential role model for inclusion in sports.

:DEN Mikkel Hansen

HANDBALL

Handball icon Mikkel Hansen had as impressive a farewell as any player could hope for with a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, the second of his career (which also includes a silver). Having scored 1,387 goals in 276 matches for Denmark, he earned recognition for his exceptional skills, leadership and achievements in both national and international competitions, winning the World Championship title in three consecutive editions (2019, 2021 and 2023) as well as multiple medals at the European Championship. • Shades of 1998 with  and  in the same group but this time it's really a terrible draw for the Thistles. I recall Brazil and Scotland played in the same group in 1974 and 1990 too so that's quite a high probabiliy rate.

    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
    • Belgium is the luckiest in this story
    • One of the worst possible draw for us. Group really easy but having to face  or  in the Round of 32 is devastating.
