Any idea what makes the Budapest pool so fast by the way? I know in speed skating and track cycling altitude plays a role, for example, but isn't water...you know...water? :p

I get that it has something to do with the pool and some kind of technology, that's obvious, but not really sure what it is that can make a pool 'faster'.

it's about 2 main factors: first, the pool's size and shape (depth, width and also the gradient of the pool's sides -if the walls are perfectly vertical or not), which has an influence on the water mass movement following the swimmers' action (the more the walls can absorb the waves made by the swimmers, the faster they can go; meanwhile, the bigger the waves are, the more they slow the swimmers down); second, water hardness might also be a factor (less than the pool's technical features, but still) as in different Countries there might be different habits (if not laws) about the sanification of the water itself (for instance, here in Italy we use to put a lot of chlore in pools' water, more than in many other places)

environmental and water's temperature can also have an impact, but in the indoor events I think there's no big difference between places (and the water's temperature is standardized by FINA for sure)

altitude might also be a factor (as it is for all the aerobic efforts), but normally there are no swimming big events in high places, so it's more a chance than a real thing since the 1968 Olympics and the 1975 Worlds (which were held in :COL Cali)

:USA Gretchen Walsh is absolutely insane! 3 individual golds and 5 individual World Records so far and I would imagine there'll be two more individual golds and a few more World Records yet to come. Completely in a league of her own.

Is this the first time (some) top swimmers are actually taking the short course world championships serious, or what? :p

This is what I meant earlier in the year about the 'believability' of a sport :d

not that it's unexpected, but the list of Olympic champions/medallists missing this championship is starting to grow up too much :nopompom:

I think that some of the Olympic champions from the Paris Games were absent for the event

    • Of the top teams the world with traditions, only Portugal didn`t play in 3 World Cups in a row: 1986-2002 (1990, 1994 and 1998), but then fewer teams played in the World Cup than now. I don't really remember what caused the crisis in Portuguese football in the 1990s or how it was done with this later? Perhaps we should follow their example?
    • Well... If not qualifying for the World Cup for the third consecutive time isn't enough to bring about change in Italy, I can't imagine what will be.
    • Gravina is simply stupid and probably has some kind of hold over other important key figures in Italian football, since he was elected in 2024 with a majority of over 90% of the votes... I have a hard time imagining it any other way. Compared to him, even Carraro, Berlusconi and Moggi seem like nice and kind gentlemens   Some people believe that Calciopoli in 2006 began the decline of Italian football and that may be true. It only got worse from there, not counting a single accidental Euro 2021 win- something similar to Greece in 2004. In 2009 Roberto Baggio prepared a 900-page report on necessary reforms in Italian football, but the then-FIGC board tossed it into the trash bin. Now we see the consequences...
    • I thought our former football President was greedy, selfish, power hungry and delusional, but apparently he has an equal counterpart in Gravina. Some people just lack common decency.
    • Well, it's possible that Italians may be more bitter towards short track officials after the robbery they perpetrated against Sighel at the Olympics and therefore more willing to comment and criticize them, but it doesn't make the decision any less ridiculous.   Also, the fact we are Italians, and therefore used to the low standards of football refereeing, makes us especially qualified and trained to identify biased/crooked/incompetent judging
    • I think it was never in the history of our sport has there been anyone as brazen and stupid as Gravina. Before presidents would resign, or at least hide for a while, rather than go into a full-blow scandalous attitude with full larrogance and pride. I hope this idiot gets fired anyway, even if he doesn't resign.

    • Joking aside, apparently discussions are ongoing with ECB and CI for some kind of euro 6 Nations in T20 cricket - apparently the idea at this point is automatic qualification for England, Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands, while the final two places will be decided at a Tri-series in which Italy will be the only automatic entry, more or less guarnteeing Italy entry - from there, its two parallel Tri series with a finals day. Apparently inspired by the rise of Nepal and the Asia Cup, English cricket think they can make a short sharp tournament of this sort financially viable, as it would involve only three T20 games over 5 days in the early season, and they could rest the biggest players while getting some goodwill from ICC - previously they had not shown interest in a comp the Scots and Dutch have always wanted.
