A thread to discuss all things related to the upcoming winter Olympics :yes

We’re less than two years out, and while Canada has already qualified their first athletes in ice hockey, the qualification period is really starting to ramp up up.

Whenever I have time in the upcoming year and a half (might not), I’ll try my best to share previews of some of the Olympic qualification events (including Olympic Trials for Canada, mixed doubles is from late December to early January by the way), but if anyone wants to do their own though I’m not stopping anyone :d

Ask me how long it took me to realize you weren't talking about tennis (mixed doubles).

  • 3 months later...

Field is set for the Canadian Curling Mixed Doubles Olympic Trials, with 16 teams looking to rep the Maple Leaf at the upcoming World Championships, but more importantly the Olympics in a little over a years time.

Kadriana Lott/Colton Lott - 2024 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships Medalists

Laura Walker/Kirk Muyres - 2024 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships Medalists

Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant - 2024 Canadian Mixed Doubles Championships Medalists

Nancy Martin/Steve Laycock - 2023-2024 CMDR

Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing - 2023-2024 CMDR

Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter - Trials Direct Entry Qualifier #1

Rachel Homan/Brendan Bottcher - Trials Direct-Entry Qualifier #2

Jennifer Armstrong/Tyrel Griffith - Trials Direct-Entry Qualifier #2

Riley Sandham/Brendan Craig - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Lisa Weagle/John Epping - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Taylor Reese-Hansen/Corey Chester - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Sophie Gionest/Robert Desjardins - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Melissa Adams/Alex Robichaud - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Jessica Zheng/Victor Pietrangelo - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Paige Papley/Evan Van Amsterdam - - December 9, 2024 CMDR

Jaelyn Cotter/Jim Cotter - December 9, 2024 CMDR

I’m surprised we’re only seeing a couple double up between four-person and mixed doubles.

As for rooting interests, I’m hoping for Peterman/Gallant or Homan/Bottcher. If not, Walker/Muyers, Lott/Lott, Jones/Laing or Weagle/Epping.

  • 2 weeks later...

Rather than a last minute decision between people who have failed to qualify in the men's/women's team they are taking this event seriously.

This time, it might be a bit too early :p

    • Slovakia pulled the goalie out in the Overtime and played 4 vs 3  for more than 2 minutes    We suddeenly pulled out goalie and have control of the puck for like 2 minutes in the first 2 minutes of the overtime but without soring than lost the puck and give up a 2 on 0 breakaway empty net goal for the czechs    Interesting strategy

    • Yeah, there's certainly things to complain about from an athletes' perspective, but snow should really not be much of an issue indeed. Mostly things like the enormous geographical spread and it's consequences like there not being one big opening ceremony and everything being spread around a bunch of small Olympic 'villages'/accomodations - so not really the Olympic feeling and atmosphere for the athletes since they'll mostly just stay around athletes of their own sport as in any regular competition.   We'll be going very near to the Olympic area in a few weeks (Coppa Italia in Falcade), let's see what things look like by then.
    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory
