Short Track Speed Skating Discussion | Qualification to Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 Road to Milano Cortina 2026

The national team trials to determine South Korea’s short track representatives for the Milan Olympics are currently underway. This week features three races (500m / 1000m / 1500m), followed by another three races next week (500m / 1000m / 1500m). The combined points from all six races will decide who earns a spot on the Olympic team, and a major shake-up in the men’s lineup is expected. In the first week, Rim Jong Un—winner of three gold medals at the 2025 World Junior Championships—claimed victory in the 1500m, while Shin Dongmin—also a triple gold medalist from the 2024 Junior Worlds—won the 500m. Hwang Daehon, the 2022 Olympic gold medalist in the 1500m, finished second in both races and is on track to make his return to the national team. At this rate, it seems unlikely that we’ll see familiar names like Park Jiwon or Kim Gunwoo at the Olympics.

Wow, the final selection is already made now? :yikes:

Interesting, keep up updates please! I assume Kim Gilli will be on her way, normally?

IIRC this is how early Korea always does Olympic selections for short track. It's actually a small part of why Ahn Hyun-soo / Viktor An went from :KOR to :RUS, he didn't have a chance to qualify for the 2010 Olympics because of an injury he suffered in 2008.

Is there a livestream link for the event?

Edit: Never mind, found it

Seems like basically the same system as in 2022.

That said, I think :CAN Montreal hosting two of the four competitions is news.

very important information, thank you for catching that. I tried a simulation with World Tour points and you can't qualify enough athletes in each discipline anyway so it i guess you would have to use the ranking points.

Arianna Fontana is preparing for the another season in a row alone with her husband in Canada and the USA, apart from the rest of the Italian team. I only hope she will still want to compete in the mixed relay in next season World Cup and at the Olympics (she competed in the women's relay last season, but not in the mixed relay) and I think that she can do a some training with the rest of the team during the season. With Fontana in the mixed relay our chances of even winning gold will increase significantly.
