The battle of Britain's heavyweights is under way at the European Championships. 

 

Bianca Cook, now representing :IOM is the second seed whilst :GBR Rebecca McGowan is the 4th seed so they are on opposite sides of the draw.

 

Both have won their opening matches and are through to the quarter finals.

Haven't seen anything for live results but it looks like the early rounds are being streamed live on YouTube and the finals are being broadcast on EurovisionSport:

Think it is safe to say that Bianca Cook's Olympic ambitions are over after a defeat in the quartefinals. Rebecca McGowan progresses through to semifinals after a hard fought win over :FRA 5th seed Solene Avoulette.

All 4 of :GBR likely Olympians come away from Belgrade with medals - Gold for Sinden and Cunningham, Silver for Jones and Bronze for McGowan. Would be very pleased if that could be replicated when we get to Paris.

At this stage Bianka is an injury sub. Odd how quickly it changes.

 

The results are very encouraging in what is, in some senses, a transitional period. Sinden looks a very strong gold shout, Jones appears back on the upward swing and medal viability,though not the slam dunk she once was, but cunningham is the real gift of the cycle, quickly becoming a real player in his weight class. McGowan's rise is also a salutary lesson that there is something to be said for getting 'ring' time in non-Olympic weightclasses while waiting for your chance behind a strong incumbant, something I hope Powell and Goodman notice. Powell, in particular looks to me like she could push on one weight up. hopefully Williams can come back to some form for the next cycle.

      Spring Nationals, Day #1   men's 50m Back: Michele Lamberti, 24.38 (new NR) women's 800m Free: Simona Quadarella, 8.21.01 men's 400m Free: Davide Marchello, 3.47.76 women's 100m Breast: Lisa Angiolini, 1.06.33; Benedetta Pilato, 1.06.39 men's 50m Fly: Lorenzo Gargani, 23.31 women's 400m IM: Giada Alzetta, 4.41.00 men's 50m Free: Leonardo Deplano, 21.64 women's 4*100m Free Relay: best splits: Sara Curtis, 53.53 (1st leg), Emma Virginia Menicucci, 54.02 (internal leg)   the individual champions are qualified to the European Championships per rule, but not a single second ranked swimmer did better than the qualifying time set by the federation, they all have to try again at the Settecolli meet in June (or get the pass in other races here in Riccione this week)   so, day 1 is over and the championship is already very disappointing, especially because none of the youngsters expected to make a step ahead in the hyerarchy of our swimming did show any sign of improvement

      Serbia- Italy 0-6   I don't know how tjis Serbia can to draw 0-0 with Sweden at home... I have the impression that Sweden plays its best matches against Italy and is weak in the rest? However, 1 place in this group will be difficult to do and we won't avoid a playoff spot for spot on the World Cup. If we're to dream of first place, we absolutely must win in Denmark on Saturday.

      wins 3-2 and also missed a penalty. Poland's chances have been reduced so much they basically have to win in Dublin in four days time.
