GB Basketball

Recommended Posts

Probably the most disappointing missed quota this cycle was with the women's basketball team but perhaps already indications British Basketball are beginning to turn their attention to LA '28.

It looks like they are finally putting together a 3x3 program. Martin Dyan has been announced as the new 3x3 programme manager with GB entering the 2024 FIBA Europe Cup and the 2024 U23 Nations League for both men and women.

In July, GB women will be competing against Germany and GB men will be against South Sudan in London as part of an event that will also see the US squad competing in the city as part of their Olympic preparation.

Unlikely to progress to the quarter finals, but  will aim to finish 3rd or 4th in the group to progress to the 9th-16th classification playoffs.

In terms of the Women:

U20s (Division B) placed 12th out of 17 in 2023. This year placed 7th out of 15.

Away from the junior squads, the Team GB women will shortly be in action for the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup Pre-Qualifying. The fixtures as follows:

19 August - :GBR v :ARG

21 August - :GBR v :LBN

Another disappointing result for GB's women's team as they lose their opener in the world cup pre qualifier 53-47 to :ARG.

Given Argentina are ranked 10 places lower than us it's a match that we would have expected to win.

I see the British domestic competition has been confirmed as SuperLeague Basketball. Nine clubs, with Plymouth pulling out. All a bit embarrassing but probably the only sensible answer to the 777 debacle, in the short term anyway. The only light at the end of the tunnel is that ice hockey went through something similar with Sekonda superLeague, and its replacement EIHL has become a reasonable product that actually got GB Ice Hockey moving upwards a bit.

More :GBR basketball action this week with the men's 3x3 team (:clap:we actually have a team now:clap:) competing in the 3x3 Europe Cup in Vienna this week.

They've got a tough group - they will take on Olympic silver medalists :FRA and Olympic 4th placed :LAT - but it will be interesting to see how they measure up against the more established teams.

:GBR men's 3x3 finish their pool games with 1 win and 1 loss. They suffered a bit of a collapse against :FRA to go down 21-14 before sneaking out a 21-20 win against :LAT.

May be enough to see them progress to the quarter-finals if :FRA can defeat :LAT in the final pool game. :yikes:

    • Serbia- Italy 0-6   I don't know how tjis Serbia can to draw 0-0 with Sweden at home... I have the impression that Sweden plays its best matches against Italy and is weak in the rest? However, 1 place in this group will be difficult to do and we won't avoid a playoff spot for spot on the World Cup. If we're to dream of first place, we absolutely must win in Denmark on Saturday.
    • However it's Antoni Kowalski who becomes the first  player to qualify for the Crucible TV phase after beating  Jamie Jones 10-8 in the last Q round!
    • These stats are ridiculous.  I think ElShorbagy and ElSherbini are still in the Top 10 now.   (By comparison, 15 years is also the time span since Katie Ledecky has lost a 1500m race.)   Source: PSA Facebook
    • And another incredible performance for us in judo, is like this sport literally revived.
    • wins 3-2 and also missed a penalty. Poland's chances have been reduced so much they basically have to win in Dublin in four days time.
