So it is all, just 1 run, who win progress further ? How they pick which side athletes climb, is it by seeding or random draw ?

That was a one-off. The kayak cross is mayhem 9 times out of 10.

I think if you only allow two athletes in the competition you should see to it they do not meet before the final.

Yeah, one run only. The better time (aka higher seed) is on the left side.
