Are you sure this is the table?

I say this because I know that in Tokyo 2020 the draw was different: 1-2 were in the opposite side of the table but 3-4 were drawed to decide if they had to go in the side of 1 or 2; same thing for 7-8 against 1-2 and 5-6 against 3-4.

maybe in paris they have changed the rules, but in Tokyo it was different

In Tokyo there was no draw for team events (what you say is true for individual events, and it will be the same for Paris).

Michele Gallo's gold medal in the men's Individual Sabre at the recent European Champs forced our coaches to change the Olympic team, switching position between Gallo himself and Pietro Torre

 

now Gallo is back among the 3 starters in both the Individual and Team competition, meanwhile Torre becomes the alternate/reserve man for the Team event only
