I had seen this before in other Taekwondo competitions in China. You may honestly wonder why someone like that bothers being a commentator I don't know anything about taekwondo, but if I was paid to do commentary, at the very least I'd try and pronounce the names If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Fly_like_a_don 978 Posted March 15 #34 Share Posted March 15 Ali Abbasi lost 1st round and then was trailing 2-13 50s left and hit few kicks and punches but at 7-13 delivered an unbelievably strong kick and the mouthguard of Hong Kong athlete went out and the Afghani was given RSC victory Olympian1010 and Josh
MHSN 3,333 Posted March 15 #35 Share Posted March 15 well. you can't be luckier than this Abbasi guy he even lost a round to Nepal. but managed to win some close matches and in the SF, he lost the 1st round and was trailing in the 2nd round too but then he landed a big big kick and the HKG guy probably didn't notice the count, therefore didn't say " I'm ready" to the ref and lost by RSC. I know some people here think this refugee idea is cool and nice but it's not. this guy Abbasi was representing Afghanistan until few months ago (I mean even years after the fall of Kabul, it's not like he fled the country when the savages of Taliban arrived) Afghanistan can send only 2 athletes here (like everybody else) they have two much better athletes in 58kg and +80kg. so this guy probably thought OK I can apply to be in "King Tommy team" and found a shortcut to the Olympics. if anybody with a refugee status can participate, then each country should be allowed to send so many as they want. I mean if you can't make the national team , you can always easily make the refugee team. you don't have to be a real refugee. King Tommy accepts everybody. I kinda agree it's as ridiculous as allowing Russia and Belarus to participate as AIN. Lots of loopholes. With no international tournaments played Russians can easily represent AIN as Belarus and qualify more. I wondered who in Asia gave refuge to this guy. There are some who really need it and some exploiting it

There are some who really need it and some exploiting it there are something like 3 millions Afghans living in Iran (legally or illegally), so I guess that's the answer. most (if not all) of their Taekwondo athletes grew up here. my point is, he probably had both options. when he didn't make the Afghan team, he used the plan B.
