Lara van Ruijven, last year's 500m world champion, has been hospitalized in France during a training camp. She is apparently seriously ill and is reported to be in a stable but critical condition.

The national team coach Jeroen Otter today said there has been not a single sign of recovery and Van Ruijven is very much fighting for her life. She is in an artificial coma and that's not expected to change (at least in a positive way) any time soon.

Apparently she got struck by some sort of auto-immune disorder, leading to severe complications including internal bleedings. A second surgery has already been done but didn't lead to any positive change.

It's pretty clear: this is very much going in the wrong direction.

I'm afraid this is not coming as a surprise, but it is absolutely devastating nonetheless. The Dutch speed skating federation has just announced the death of Lara van Ruijven at 27.

Barely three months ago she was showing us how to stay fit in these times. I really which disease just completely shredded through her in a matter of weeks (no word about COVID-19, and it didn't sound like that).

This is so devastatingly sad. I met Lara in 2015, and she was a nice person. Condolences to her family, friends and teammates.

For what it's worth: during the week there were some more complications, but doctors thought they had gotten it under control. Things escalated though, and this morning they had to bring the news to her family that any form of recovery was not going to happen. At the beginning of the evening she passed away with her family, boyfriend (and possibly some teammates) with her.

Devastated to hear the news of her disease and her passing. Lara van Ruijven was an amazing athlete and showed an incredibly enthusiastic and likeable personality in her media presence. A massive loss for short track and Dutch sports.

The Dutch shorttrack team is an incredibly tightknit team. I hope they can support and comfort each other.

Wow, absolutely incredible sporting story I have just heard!

Eddy Alvarez, who took Silver for :USA in the 5000m ST in Sochi made his Major League Baseball debut for the Miami Marlins on Wednesday! :yikes: Played 2 games against Baltimore.

He’s the first, needless to say, Winter Olympian ever to play in MLB.

He is from a Miami Cuban family :CUB - and was in fact the first Cuban-American ever to make the Winter Olympics. Since Sochi had been playing pro Baseball in the minor leagues eventually rising to the AAA level - ie one level below MLB. Marlins have been hard-hit by COVID, so that’s probably why, but an incredible achievement.  There’s been lots of dual skaters-cyclists but.....

    • Spalletti is a much better coach than Gattuso, but what did his team show at the Euro against Switzerland, or in Oslo against Norway? Nothing... I'm afraid that even Guardiola and Klopp wouldn't help here- well, maybe they could somehow push Bosnia through, but what next?
    • Denmark can only blame themselves for that Belarus match. A win and they'd qualify with a game to spare alas...   Gattuso has no business being a manager at this level. Italian problems come from the lack of domestic talent in Serie A but Gattuso ain't gonna fix anything.
    • Just listening to Gattuso is enough to understand that he's a simpleton.  Honor, pride, grit...but he is a coach, not a Spartan soldier. And he was surrounded by other idiots who confessed they had to buy their high school diploma. 1-0 up but down to 10 men and they are playing only counters with a lone forward with good pace (Kean, who almost scored the second) and Gattuso replaces him with a target man. Then 1-1, the team is forced to play more possession and the first thing he does is taking out a ball playing midfielder (who served a near assist just moments before) for Frattesi, who is only good in running into empty spaces to finish but always shy away from playing the ball.

    • The last time this team played well was at Euro 2021 under Mancini, but they 8 months later they lost to Macedonia at home in a 2022 World Cup qualifier play- off at home game... In my opinion, Italy Euro success was thanks to Chiellini and Bonucci's recent big form and Chiesa's tournament of a life. Without them, Italy is simply average team: the 1-4 and 0-3 group defeats to Norway wasn`t a case (under Spalletti, so a good manager, at all). Play-offs, however, are always a lottery in this format – especially when you're playing decisive matches away and also under the pressure of Italy now + Bastoni's red card episode. Such things are decisive. Take the current play-offs: Poland, Denmark and Italy could just as easily have advanced, instead of the Czech Republic, Sweden or Bosnia. Top teams simply don't have to play in these play-offs, why they avoiding the risk of defeat. In groups you have 7-8 home and away matches and no only one- last match chance away
    • Btw our coach (likely in a couple of days ex-coach as well ) Calzona, not the pizza, Italian himself, presented his 2 cents about Italian failure as well in the press conference after our useless match against Romania. Talk about how nonsensical and pointless this match was    https://sport.aktuality.sk/futbal/clanok/francesco-calzona-reakcia-na-bosna-taliansko-zaspali-sme-2026040100555755775
    • Was the problem really the coaching staff ? I mean it is 3rd time and in all 3 cases there were different coaches, right ?   Probabyl the issue is somewhere else, I did not know Gattuso and his staff played the matches on the pitch themselves
    • It's sad that Buffon is tarnishing his legend and the same think is for Gattuso. Ranieri did the right thing by refusing... Who's going to replace Gravina now? Malago, or someone from the football community?
