The sister of Angelina Topić, Sofija Topić, is already beating her youth records.

Sofija (11) jumped 140cm which is better Angelina's 138cm at that age.

If using decathlon/heptathlon points tables this Chepngetich run would be worth 1339 points which makes this the third highest scored WR among all women events.

For comparison the hightest scoring WR is Reinsch in the discus worth 1382 points. Lisovskaya in the shot put is 1372 points. Chistyakova in the long jump is 1333 points. So we're all talking good old :GDR  & :URS school of athletics :old:

Among the men Duplantis' current pole vault WR is also worth 1339 points. The highest scoring WR is Zelezny in the javelin 1362 points. Bolt's 100/200 records, Powell in long jump and Warholm in 400h are also higher scored if barely.

Eyerollingly ridiculous performance.

Although the talk on places like Letsrun is significantly more ridiculous. Stuff like "Radcliffe's record stood for years and now they're going minutes faster?!".

Well, yeah, duh. How about swimming world records being obliterated when the super suits came in. Someone running 2:15 on shoes from, say, 2017 would be far more....odd.

Awards time!  Here's the World Athletics nominations for Track Runner of the year.

Nominees announced for Track Athlete of the Year 2024 | World Athletics

And for Field Event athlete of the year, although both of these choices are pretty bloody obvious.  High demand for yellow and blue flowers, put it that way.  :thankyou:

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)

    • I read the Olympic qualification documents for weightlifting. A country can have the opportunity to send a maximum of 4 athletes in one gender, but the conditions are very strict.
    • world champion Jessica Schilder opened her season up with 19.78 in France.
    • wait! what???   so, there won't be specialized double sculls, but those boats would have to feature 2 single specialists if a Nation wants to enter 2 proper singles M+W??? tell me I misread the expalaination...
    • Yeah, they do get broadcast pretty regularly.  I remember even back in Bode Miller's day they would show the training.
