Pools have just been announced for VNL 2024. As a reminder, the top five unqualified nations in the World Rankings (including an African country, which is pretty much guaranteed to be Kenya as no African nation will be competing in events that’ll add points towards their World Ranking) after the end of the preliminary phase will qualify for Paris.

Here’s the countries still in contention:

:ITA Italy (338.97 pts)

:CHN China (329.65 pts)

:JPN Japan (305.09 pts)

:NED Netherlands (287.94 pts)

:CAN Canada (265.66 pts)

:KEN Kenya (162.42 pts)

China and Italy seem safe to qualify. For Japan, it would take a disastrous VNL for them to fall behind both Netherlands and Canada, don’t see it happening. IMO it’ll be between us and the Netherlands for the final quota. Kenya has pretty much locked up the African quota.

some of the illustrious exclusions by Pezz...ehm, Mazzanti from last year are back (Orro, Fahr, Egonu, Bosetti, De Gennaro), but not all those I expected

I mean, no Ofelia Malinov while Bosio is still there among the setters, no Folie nor Chirichella among the middle blockers

Chirichella was clearly worse at the Novara than Danesi and Bonifacio. The only thing that appealed to her was greater experience. Folie ended her adventure with the national team in 2021 and she probably couldn't be persuaded to come back. Malinov also didn't want to return to the national team, from what I heard. The most important thing is that Fahr on this list- currently the best Italian middle blocker and let her be healthy.

I don't follow club volleyball too much, but for what I saw in the Champions League matches of the Vero Volley Milano, Folie should have been taken back to the NT by force...she's been by far the best player and the key to success in CL

I know Malinov has personal/mental issues that might let her decide not to comeback, but at least not calling up Bosio after last year should have been a "must" :bones: almost like naming Orro, de Gennaro and Egonu

    • so, the Swiss reigning champions, who saved their ass in the last match of the RS, now are almost safe in the semis once again...   very impressive performance also by RB Salzburg, I didn't expect them to make such a good run, even if the 2nd leg match won't be easy at all and they're all but safe in the final four

    • I guess 65, 79, 88, 110, 110+ will be the Olympic classes for 2028 (I don't think IOC would allow them to increase the number of gold medals available at the Games yet...most likely they want to to stay with the current lineup and see how it goes in the next Olympic cycle in terms of doping scandals before taking any decision)  or maybe they will keep those weights for the "regular activity" and later on they will set 5 different weight classes only good for Olympic purposes, with dedicated tournaments when it's time for the OQ (like Taekwondo, more or less)  but it's just my personal speculation, I have no infos from the inside
    • Today the funniest tournament of the season, the Shoot Out, will starts
    • Luckily for us, it happened exactly as we thought. Unfortunately, the Serbian players had to play the entire match, the difference in value between the starters and the reserves being quite large, and thus at the end of the match their fatigue was evident.
    • if they limit the number of qualified athletes to 8 per category that will not exceed the allocated quota (marginally). I know 8 athletes only is a bit harsh but will be more competitive.
    • Thank you for putting this together, it was fun to go through. From your keyboard to God's ears on Canada's short track team here (I believe you have us at 4-1-1, which is realistic if everything works out).   Leaving us off the podium in speed skating women's pursuit was interesting.   Three medals of any colour in curling would be celebrated at this point after two disasterous cycles.   In hockey, I'll always take our girls over the Americans (was "lucky" enough to see them lose in 2018 in person, though. Only time in 6 Games. Haha...hahahahaha...ha).    For the men, I said above unless Canada finds a goaltender I'm not too optimistic. USA is just too well rounded. But lots can happen by then, and in a one game elimination tournament.
    • big decision by IWF   new weight categories, 8 for men and 8 for women from June 2025   Men 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 98kg, 110kg, +110kg Women 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, +86kg   and this means all World records will be erased AGAIN !    https://iwf.sport/2024/12/03/iwf-executive-board-meeting-in-manama-brn-december-2-3-main-decisions/   I think that was a good decision, 10 weights was too much. but erasing the current World Records was the down side of this decision.   but does this mean they have some agreements with IOC to have all these weights at the Olympics ? that looks unlikely though  but looking at the numbers and the gap between weights none of them look like a "non-Olympic weight" at least that's what IWF thinks.
