Interval start, like cycling time trial or cross country skiing. The athletes don't know the course ahead of time, and navigate using a map (that they are only given at the start, so no time to study) and a compass. They have to visit/check-in/punch-in at checkpoints noted on the map. If they miss a checkpoint (called "control"), then they are disqualified. The fastest time wins. No teamwork, no assistance from coaches or support staff. 

 

There's some other rules too, of course (and I could have some things wrong), but those should be the basics.

Men’s bronze medal match in softball isn’t being streamed, was really looking forward to watching that.

 Sadurska was practically drowning, the assistants in the water had to perform a maneuver. Apparently this is normal? If you have assistance, come DSQ. A crazy sport.
