[OFF TOPIC] Coronavirus Pandemic

Recommended Posts

3570 new cases today, more than any other day, all time high ! I won't be surprised if that reaches 4000 tomorrow or Saturday.

no surprise at all, social distancing is dead and buried . :wall:  COVID-19 is not on the headlines anymore, nobody cares and it seems almost everybody thinks this is over ! :yikes:  I'm very very disappointed in most of my friends, my relatives, even my own sister, most of them are highly educated but now I found out how irresponsible they are   I had been mocked by some of them for being "sissy" (aka responsible)

the death rate is still relatively low (what a shame to consider +50 deaths per day as low :( ) but we will see if that changes in a week or two with this new wave which is probably the second peak.

Hungarian media now reports (quoting minister of foreign affairs) that from tomorrow, border is open mutually between Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary for each other’s citizens, with no quarantine, no negative test requirement.

Big if true (and hopefully it does not lead to more Covid)

At the same time the president of the republic delivers her first-ever state of the republic address in the Slovak parliament of the coronavirus pandemic era

Quote

The pandemic has unveiled what is viable and what we can lay our trust in, and what barely survives and requires our utmost attention, President Zuzana Čaputová told MPs and the country on June 5, when she delivered her first-ever state of the republic address to the Parliament.

She went on listing what the country and its politicians and inhabitants have learned in the past few months, and what she believes should be the focus of public policies in the post-pandemic period. She stressed the need for economic measures, health care development, and drew attention to the challenges connected with the most vulnerable members of the society, along with climate change and the support for culture.

what is so significant and so special about year 2020?

1. It is the start of a new normal a new norm due to the virus. Virus spread to the whole world.

2. People aroudn the whole world must change their lifestyle and stay indoors to prevent being infected with the virus.

3. Wearing a face mask becomes mandatory.

How long will this pandemic last? No one knows. All the past virus we had 2 - 3 years to go off. So how long will this pandemic last? No one knows. However it is surely not showing any signs of slowing. All the different countries around the whole world are badly affected by the virus.

But it is.

Aaaaand today, after 3 months and 2 days after first confirmed case of corona in :POL we have record of new daily cases (576). Well done Ministry of Health and Government overally. From today almost everything is reopen, I believe that in 2 weeks we might have +1000 new cases every day as we don't need to wear masks anymore in "open space" and from Monday in schools will be held final exams. And oh, how I could forget about presidential elections which will take place in 3 weeks...

    • Netherlands will boycott this edition ???       According to the NL Times, a petition by journalist Teun van de Keuken has attracted just over 114,000 signatures at the time of writing, stating: "We call on the Dutch government not to allow the Dutch national football team to participate in the World Cup in the United States. We do not want our footballers to implicitly support President Donald Trump's violent terror policy against innocent migrants (or not in possession of a US passport) through their performance at the tournament. "We also disapprove of the aggressive military interference of the United States in other countries and we find it insistisible that our footballers will play at a tournament of a president who threatens to invade and occupy his own ally Greenland, with which he destroys NATO and endangers world peace.'”
    • First,  … Oriol Cardona Coll is the favourite in men’s ski mountaineering, with the mixed relay also favoured, and there’s fringe chances for Queralt Castellet in women’s snowboard halfpipe, Lucas Eguibar in men’s snowboard cross, and Ana Alonso in women’s ski mountaineering (she got into a car crash a few months ago, wasn’t serious thankfully but not in great form) depending on the day…    For  Bulgaria one of Zamfirov or Krashniak in men’s parallel giant slalom is what I’m thinking, but maybe Yankov can medal too (although his season has been pedestrian), Zamfirova in women’s parallel slalom also has a decent chance   For  Belgium, I think Kim Meylemans in women’s skeleton, the Crystal Globe winner, and potentially one of the Desmet siblings in short track…   For  Georgia, obviously Metelkina/Berulava in pairs figure skating   For  Latvia it’s all about luge. Bots/Plume and Upite/Kaluma in men’s/women’s doubles, Aparjods in men’s singles, and the team relay. Kruzbergs might also have a chance in short track but don’t see it.    For  Poland, in short track Maliszewska in the women’s 500m, and the women’s and mixed relays have chances, Krol-Walas in women’s parallel slalom, Zurek in the men’s 500m and 1000m. Easiest pick of them all.    For  their biggest chance is mixed team aerials IMO due to the lack of teams competing, Kotovskyi in men’s aerials and Brykina are other chances.    I actually don’t have  Brazil reaching the podium, Rocha Silveira hasn’t had the best results on the WC circuit, Burgener’s scores this season won’t be enough for a podium, and most of their hopes rest on Braathen IMO   Same with  Estonia, Kaldvee/Lill are a strong team but I have four teams slightly above them.
    • fis basically only cares about alpine skiing (and despite that, they always find the way to make disasters also on it) if it wasn't for the North American tv money, I guess they would even get rid of those "freestyle" events, leaving them to the X Games organization
    • Last Olympics Canada only rejected a quota after they got to 8 female. Hard to say but they will probably take them.
    • A bit shocking to see Brazil with the most votes so far! They do have 3 good medal chances though (Pinheiro Braathen, Rocha Silveira, Burgener) so it's well deserved.   I also originally included  New Zealand on the poll but I must have deleted them by accident although they probably also would have gotten the same amount of votes as Brazil so it wouldn't have made much of a difference.
    • Korea accepted a halfpipe quota so there will be a total of 22/25 competitors entered in women's halfpipe.   The good news is that women's ski cross will have 32 entries for the first time since 2010.
