I'm not sure if this is the right place to comment, but why was Belarus banned anyway?

The invasion towards Kyiv was started in 2022 from the territory of belarus.

Belarussian infrrustructrure is beeing used for drone attacks on Ukraine.

Belarus is involved in illegal transfers of stolen Ukrainian children from the occupied territories.

I stand with Ukraine of course, and it’s really horrible hearing about all the things going on with the war, Belarus (and Russia) should definitely be banned from competing because of it, and at the very least certainly not competing under their own flag but… if you’re going to do that for those two surely other countries should be punished as well, I can think of a few that have definitely done things along the same line?

Thank you. It is really an interesting question.

To avoid of duplication - I have posted some thoughts on this at this post https://totallympics.com/forums/topic/21307-winter-paralympic-games-milano-cortina-2026/page/5/#comment-728854

But to be more specific and trying to say: why is the russian case different?

In two words: other states did not annex territories, did not include annexed territories to theis sport`s structures, did not use objects and facilities at the annexed territories for their sports and athletes. These actions directly violate the Olympic Charter - according to the document the structire of the Olympic movement is based on the borders of the independent states.

This statement is proven.

Russians hired best lawyers they could, went to TAS/CAS and tried to prove that the sanctions imposed on their NOC are allegal becaues there were the same situations when the sanctions were not imposed.

They lost the case - TAS/CAS analyzed all the cases presented by russians and did not find any other case matching the russian one.

Thxx. Now it makes sense. I imagined they had helped Russia, but other countries did it too, and I didn't understand why they specifically had been banned.

    • Oh god, the cross-country skiing is done by one of those typical English-language generic commentators again   Keeps calling the Icelandic lady Arna Albertsdottir 'the Australian Lauren Parker'.   Mind you, Parker won Paralympic gold in triathlon in Paris so should be somewhat recognizable or known to a professional commentator. Mind you again, when he started with that, which was when Albertsdottir was coming up to a split time, the graphics clearly showed Parker's time as currently fastest with Albertsdottir's time still counting (hence, it was her we were looking at).   Oh, and the lady he keeps calling Lauren Parker (from Australia) has 'ICELAND' written on her suit.
