Good crowds, in Kazakhstan. Meh

Speed Skating doesn’t really get any crowds outside of the Netherlands, and a few select events here and there.

Absolutely horrid weather, small field of skaters, small crowd, but some great racing on the men’s side (and an awesome crash around 14:15 as well):

That weather looks awful. I love the cold weather, but even I would’ve stayed inside that day. Doesn’t seem like very many European skaters made the trip to :USA. Another great track too. I’m seeing quite a nations in the World Rankings, so if Salt Lake wins the bid for 2030...

Opening World Championship (basically their version of a WC) is on next Saturday, in Winterleiten, Austria. I believe all events will be streamed on the ATSX Ice Cross Youtube channel, but not entirely sure on that.

But seriously....did some internet research.   Seems Red Bull dropped the sport in 2019, so obviously a lot lower profile nowadays.  They can't have the Montreals or St Pauls anymore.  so no choice but to go to the smaller resorts.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
