IOC leader Coventry warns of ‘uncomfortable’ change coming to Olympics programs

I fear they're really going to cut sports from the Summer and put them in the Winter Olympics... I miss Bach:p

I do think they have a point, the selection criteria that :SWE, :NZL and :NED have now are completly unecessary in an era of limited quotas and they only serve to make Olympic competition worse.

Not that there aren't circumstances where rejecting quotas make sense (retirements, injury, some continental quotas in particularely weak continents), but fundamentally, if you qualify for the Olympics you should get to go.

It does cost money to send and accommodate athletes at the village, the NOC is expected to pay for their stay and so on, so I am ok with some sort of extra criteria. It's just that requiring top-8's or something is too much.

It depends on exactly how they do it. If it frees up space for additional sports in general, or bigger fields in sports with a ridiculously low amount of quotas, I'd be ok with it.

Didn't read any firm notes about that in the mash of worthless words, that is this Coventry speech.. But we all knew she was a terrible choice already when she was elected, so wouldn't be surprised of the eventual ruining of Olympic core values for greed and power.

I suspect they will propose a lot and then most changes won’t happen.

The less politics part essentially confirms my suspicion that both Belarus and Russia will compete under their own flag in 2028. The Refugee Team may be at risk or at the very least the team will be a lot smaller.

In terms of sport program, I think the plan is to remove nostalgia from the equation. If an event only has 10-20 active nations then maybe it doesn't belong at the Olympics.

This would increase, not reduce, costs. It’s consistently a revenue generating sport.

like seriously, I consider myself like a total olympic fanatic person, but I never watched a single second of football at the olympics once the opening ceremony started except the gold medal games ofc
