Russian Athletes and Teams pathway to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

I wasn't really paying attention to qualifying yet.   What's the status of Russia and Belarus ? I know IOC wants them to participate but are they in any qualifications events in any sports ?

Obviusly, if IOC decides to include them, Russia and Belarus will partecipate at qualifyng tournaments. But yes, today we would have some russian qualificated: tennis, BMX freestyle, judo, boxing are sports- and rankings - with russians.

Fencing have reinstated them, too (quali were supposed to start in April, but so far the first tournaments have been cancelled because of that possible return of Russians and Belarussians).

World Athletics instead has just confirmed earlier Today that Russians and Belarussians will be denied any international competition entry until the war goes on.

We're getting to the point where it'll be pointless to let the Russians and Belarusians to compete as they'll hardly be able to participate in anything. The impact, in terms of results, that their teams will have on the games will be massive outweighed by the backlash and reception they'll receive from people prior to and while the games are going on.

IOC Executive Board will meet Tuesday-Thursday this week. They are expected to address the fallout from the invasion of Ukraine on Tuesday. Wednesday will be more about Paris 2024, IFs, 2030 Winter Olympics, etc. Thursday is a little sparse, but dedicated to items around Agenda 2020+5. There will be a press conference each day. I’d imagine those can be followed on the IOC Media YouTube Channel as always.

Russia banned from team sports would be the least shocking news of the year :p

Curious what will come out of it all though.

News leaking out from the IOC meeting.

If they only ban them in team sports, that would be quite strange in individual sports where there are classic team events. Artistic Gymnastics and Fencing has team events that are as important as individual events, if not more. The same can be said about Artistic Swimming and Rhythmic Gymnastics. Not to mention Canoe Sprint and Rowing. Or the relays in Swimming and Athletics.

    • Honestly, I think you guys have a much better chance of success here than we do. It's already difficult to maintain this sport, and with this ridiculous format this year, things have gotten even worse. Years and years participating in the elite and we haven't been able to evolve; it was just a waste.
