Summer Olympic Games 2020 Qualification Systems

why 2022? it will be same year as world cup (even though world cup will be in december) will be also weird to have 2 winter games with no summer games in between

It makes a lot of sense. It’s easier to market. It gives time for the world to recover from Covid-19 (and for a vaccine to be made). Plus, the world economy can recover a bit more before then. It creates an epic year in sport.

FIG released a statement today informing that a committee will be formed and a new qualification system will be created.

I'm against this for one reason: every FIG document presented alternative qualification methods should the planned championships not be held. Creating a new system would only take more time and frustrate federations that thought they had qualified gymnasts for the Olympics according to the original documents. Ensuring continental representation in every genre could easily be achieved by adjusting the rules for the tripartite invitational quotas. Currently, Africa in men's artistic gymnastics, men's trampoline and women's trampoline, and Oceania in rhythmic gymnastics, are not currently qualified. This could be solved easily, but bet that there will come a system that will totally disrespect gymnasts who should have qualified and give quotas to smaller programs with questionable quality.

Apparently just for Tokyo.

No qualification system should be changed, whatever is done should be left, doesn't matter if it's for tokyo 2020, 2021 or 2022

as IOC is still planning with Games in July they have to change it for many sports.

right now we can assume there will not be too much sports activity until end of may and that is very optimistic.

as the games are planned two months later there is no time to held all the qualification events, which originally were planned for the period March-June.

they can stick with the old systems only if they postpone.

It is not so simple. If there is no change in Olympic dates, IOC/IFs need to check if there is enough time to hold all the qualification tournaments. For example in Boxing, they need to host continental qualifiers first and then the World qualifiers. Also, need to have sufficient gaps between those tournaments as well (specially considering that Asia/Africa already have had their qualifiers, so small gap will be beneficial to boxers from these confederations).

In case of rankings based qualification, they need to make a decision if there is need to postpone the deadline or not. For example, Tennis will be using rankings published on 8 June 2020. We have lost atleast 2-3 months of the tour. 3 months is 25% of the season. So, should ranking date be extended by say a month (unfair to those who got points in the corresponding period last year) or should they stay with the same ranking date (unfair to those who were chasing the qualification and were banking to get points in the last couple of months).

And in case of postponement to say 2022, obviously ranking issues remain. Also, how bad would it look on part of IOC and organising committee if 2021 World Champion in a sport can't take part but 2019 World Champion has qualified.

All in all, not easy decisions. Honestly, I don't think there is any decision which can be remotely acceptable/fair to all.

Also about tennis, the european spring clay season would not be held so clay specialists would be damaged.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
