i'm more surprised by some missing quotations, rather than by the legitimate choices, especially in non performance-related sports.

For example, no one other quota for VanDerFlyer, best rugby player 2022, in a small country, Ireland, #1 in world ranking, above Fra, Eng, NZ.

Don't see name of Wembanyama, a shock player that will change the game.

And overall, only another quotation for Tita/Banti: what more than wins every championship, every single race, every side, in a sport like sailing? Sailing is not athletic, or swimming, or rowing, when usually one, stronger, wins. Sailing is tactic, is brain, is phisical also, but is impossible win in this way.

PS for me, Ben Ainsle is one of 5 best sporstman everytime, with Phelps, Jordan, Bolt, Merkx. No doubt.

because it was a political vote, Dupont is a way better (and more decisive) player...moreover, only some complicated math keeps IRL ahead of FRA in the WR (at the moment clearly the best rugby Union team in the world). :p

he's only bullying some French league players right now.

he's more of a mediatic phenomenon...and his managers are trying all they can to keep him away from any serious challenge to keep the hype as high as they can before the next Draft.

I'd really like to see him in a top tier Euroleague team...I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be that decisive even at that level.

and if I were a NBA GM, I'd be really scary to pick him as the 1st overall pick, because he could become a superstar as much as being the next Bargnani.

with his body, I don't think he will succeed for many years in the NBA, if he can succeed at all.

in any case, there's no chance he can even get close to people like Jokic, Doncic, Steph or LeFlop (AKA LeBron).

I rather see him as a man that can be dominant once every while, but spending most of the time in the Injury List.

I would be partially agree with Wemba- for me is in the 6th position of youngs, i'm not so definitive like you, ok for now don t get close to people like Doncic, Jokic, etc but is not so weak. For me, he will be a good player, sure n.1 pick, and then we weel seen. And on Bargnani we can speak for hours, he was a great player with poor attitude (he simply don't like basketball) but he was picked n.1 at 21, Wemba 2 years before. And after all we are talking about best 2004up, i have seen some choices...

More doubt on VDFlyer, have you seen autumn's tests? Is not a scandal to put Dupont above VDF, is a scandal don't insert VDF in top 6.

Remains Tita/Banti. No doubt on them. What more?

@Giovanni Gianni CattaneoI don't think many people watch rugby that much to begin with. And the Wembanyana hype, well, after the Zion hype everyone just doesn't take much from the high school/college hype anymore. Way too many total busts in the NBA draft in the last few years to get excited before he actually enters the league.

Dupont is not hugely known outside Britain, Ireland, France and Italy although personally I think he's a massive talent and one of the best sportsmen to emerge in Europe for a couple of decades

@vinipereira here’s the other categories I’d like to cast votes in for the first round.

BEST NON-OLYMPIC ATHLETE

for athletes in Non-Olympic sports

#1: Paola Longoria (Racquetball) :MEX

#2: Max Verstappen (Motorsport) :NED

#3: Shannon O'Keefe (Bowling) :USA

#4: Ouk Sreymom (Boules) :CAM

BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR

for the most improved athlete or team (including Olympic, Paralympic and Non-Olympic sports)

#1: Bart Swings :BEL

#2: Remco Evenepoel :BEL

#3: Carlos Alcaraz :ESP

#4: Mixed Doubles Curling Team :ITA

#5: David Popovici :ROU

#6: Urša Bogataj :SLO

SPORT MOMENT OF THE YEAR

for any sport moment from 2022 (including Olympic, Paralympic and Non-Olympic sports)

#1: Argentina win the FIFA World Cup.

#2: Sydney McLaughlin sets a new 400m hurdles world record to win the world championships.

#3: Abdelrahman El-Sefy wins gold in sumo at The World Games after being disqualified for over-celebrating original win.

#4: Muzala Samukonga comes from behind to win 400m at Commonwealth Games.

#5: USA beats Japan to win The World Games softball gold medal in front of home crowd.

#6: The Vatican debuts at the Mediterranean Games.

I’m finding it too difficult to fairly rank athletes in the remaining categories, so this will be it for me. I’m purposely choosing to not vote in the Olympic Spirit category (didn’t feel there were any striking examples this year, more negative if anything) :dunno:

Also, something to consider for next year if we do this again…

I think it would be better to create a user generated shortlist for each category (ie, users can suggest a few 2-3 unique candidates for each category), and then hold a preliminary vote with all those candidates listed, with the top 5/6 candidates moving on to the main round of voting for each award.

There’s some athletes/teams/moments other users have suggested that I didn’t even think of or consider that I wish had when reading through the thread. There’s just so much to consider and evaluate for individual users in the first round at present.

That was my initial thought, but there wasn't much time to do something like this. Next year I will open the thread sooner so we can do shortlists.

  • Latest Posts around Totallympics

    • Posted my votes.    For the first time our small country has an athlete, who without a doubt should deserve best athlete of the year award. Without being too "cocky", Armand Duplantis is the only real threat to Tadej Pogačar.
    • And not at all by decades of neglect of fire hazards by incompetent Marxist politicians, no sirreee bob.  Everyone knows it is wind that causes fires, which is why we get so many in the north of Scotland.
    • Southern California is currently experiencing one of the worst fire events in my lifetime caused by an extreme wind event
    • Still deciding, but NHL, NFL, NBA, club volleyball (as usual), Gim-Kim in some Korean Curling event, GSOC WFG Masters, Women’s U18 World Championships, and the Australian Open for sure, Junior FIS World Championships, BWF Malaysia Masters, big air/slopestyle freestyle skiing and snowboarding/alpine snowboarding, other winter sports (Luge/bobsleigh/skeleton/alpine skiing), Speed Skating European Championships   Water Polo WC and Men’s Handball World Championships I’ll be following along with scores.
    • Rams could well beat Vikings and this is a real coin toss. Sam Darnold's first playoff game and he looked bad vs Lions last weekend in the #1 seed decider already. This is one of these rare games when a wild card team has a much better record and the home team is the underdog on paper but Rams can pull this one off and it ends up being a "non-upset" upset.
    • For my predictions I’m assessing a number of factors into it. For example in the comeback category, I prioritize injuries/life or career threatening stuff over breaks. World Championships, World Cups (and similar stuff for sports that don’t have those) also factor into it.    BEST MALE ATHLETE for sportsmen in Olympic sports   #1:  Leon Marchand #2:  Armand Duplantis (3 WR’s in a year…) #3:  Teddy Riner   Odermatt not being nominated is unexpected.      BEST FEMALE ATHLETE for sportswomen in Olympic sports   #1:  Summer McIntosh #2:  Sifan Hassan #3:  Lisa Carrington     BEST NON-OLYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes in Non-Olympic sports and disciplines   #1:  Shohei Ohtani #2:  Patrick Mahomes #3:  Max Verstappen     BEST PARALYMPIC ATHLETE for athletes with a disability   #1: #2: #3:     BEST YOUTH ATHLETE for athletes up to 18 years old (born after January 1st, 2006) (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Summer McIntosh (again) #2:  Lamine Yamal #3:  Darja Varfolomeev     BEST MEN'S TEAM for national men's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  basketball team #2:  waterpolo team #3:  volleyball team     BEST WOMEN'S TEAM for national women's teams or groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  volleyball team #2:  handball team #3:  field hockey team   If I’m gonna be completely honest, after #1 and #2, I had a hard time choosing one because all four teams had their struggles…      BEST DOUBLES/PAIR OR MIXED TEAM for doubles and pairs or mixed teams and groups (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Caterina Banti/Tito Ruggeri #2:  David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig #3:  Paul O’Donovan/Fintan McCarthy   I had to let out a laugh when I saw that  Duda/AP were nominated, because even though they won gold they were not on the same page at all through most of the season and went months on the Beach Pro Tour between May and July without a single medal      BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR for the most improved athlete (aged 19 or over) or national team (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Adriana Ruano #2:  Jasmine Paolini #3:  Shinnosuke Oka   Again, some of the nominations are confusing to me.  Vaast is surfing at his home break in Tahiti and like a lot of sports that advantage is big,  Lafond had a best jump of 14.90m in 2023 and  Alfred was a medal contender in 2023 as well.    I would put  Joan-Benjamin Gaba up there, he came into the Olympics completely out of the medal mix and he won silver and beat Hifumi by ippon in the mixed team final     COMEBACK OF THE YEAR for athletes or national teams who made a comeback performance in 2024 (including Olympic, Non-Olympic and Paralympic sports)   #1:  Sunisa Lee #2:  Paula Badosa #3:  Kristof Milak     SPORT MOMENT OF THE YEAR for any sport moment from 2024   #1:  Djokovic finally winning an Olympic gold medal in men’s singles tennis (and none of the other choices come close for me, honestly) #2:  Letsile Tebogo’s gold in the men’s 200m, first ever gold for Botswana and he also beats evil Lyles in the process  #3:  Armand Duplantis’ gold and WR in men’s pole vault   I wasn’t a fan the opening ceremony, and I thought the general consensus was that most people on here didn’t like it either, so I’m not sure on how it got nominated but…  Also thought there would be at least one non-Olympic nomination, but I guess not.   OLYMPIC SPIRIT AWARD for athletes or teams related to the 2024 Summer Olympics or Paralympics who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship in the Games or showed great determination in overcoming obstacles   #1:  Kinzang Lhamo crossing the marathon finish line #2:  Fariba Hashimi fulfilling her Olympic dream, having to hide her practices from her parents and the Taliban for doing a “boys’ activity” #3: Same thing for  Manizha Talash, I can’t imagine how hard that must be for them…   Honestly, this was a tough category. Besides Skotheim, who I very clearly think is last… I feel like it could go in any order.
    • SECOND STAGE OF VOTING     Voting for the 2024 Totallympics Awards winners is now open (click the image above).   All Totallympics members can vote, including those who didn't vote in the first stage.   Voters have until Saturday, January 18th to vote.     Before voting, don't forget to include your Totallympics' username. The list of voters will be updated here.   For each category, you can rank a maximum of three nominees of your preference, following the order:                       #1 (20 points)                       #2 (10 points)                       #3 (5 points)   You don't have to rank 3 nominees. You can rank 2 or simply pick only one (20 points) per category;   You don't have to vote in all categories, only the ones you want. Votes can be edited until the deadline.
    • Thank you to everyone who followed. I will soon provide the link for voting in the second stage
