Wrestling UWW European Championships 2019

Recommended Posts

Stellar Biliyana Dudova once again. 3rd straight Euro title in three different categories and without giving a single point in all 4 matches   This girl is so amazing. We could have had another title, but two heartbreaking loses beforehand. Our whole womens team is doing a fantastic job.

Congratulations! I cheered for every one of your girls except nikolova

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

I sat near 2 Italian girls who were screaming like they had just seen heywood naked

On-topic: congratulations for the final!

Hmm, she is a mystery, don't know her. :mumble:Very good run though, but Taybe is going to run her over tomorrow. :d

well, she's very young (and improving, for what I see)...

as her best result so far, she won the bronze medal at last year's Junior Worlds (beaten only by a Japanese girl)...

but I think she's not ready to face someone like Yusein yet...I think that tomorrow your girl will win by superiority...but still, this is a very good and unexpected result for our team (our only real hope for a medal was Chamizo)...

Unfortunately, Astana is the last place on Earth where an honest draw would take place.

Regarding the European Champs, how would you rate the technical level of competition?

unfortunately you are right. Kazakhstan was never a "fair" host in wrestling competitions. but it's more up to UWW to have "real draw" or let the organizers put a virus into their drawing software :d:d

I have to say I wasn't "that impressed" with the level. we only had few interesting finals. and Russia didn't bring some of A team members. I think most countries have long term training plans for the World Championship which is the main Olympic qualifier. in Asia (at least  for Iran) the Asian Championship is usually part of the preparation plans for the World Championship. that's never the target competition.(unlike the Asian Games) I had the feeling this European Champs was also something like that for some countries.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
    • Marian Kasprzyk (boxing) - 1964 Olympic Champion & 1960 bronze medallist passed away at the age of 86.

    • Off to Milan for the 145th session of the International Olympic Committee. Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.

    • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
