A player is eligible to participate on a World Baseball Classic team if any one of the following criteria is met The player is a citizen of the nation the team represents. The player is qualified for citizenship or to hold a passport under the laws of a nation represented by a team, but has not been granted citizenship or been issued a passport; in this case, the player may be made eligible by WBC upon petition by the player or team. The player is a permanent legal resident of the nation or territory the team represents. The player was born in the nation or territory the team represents. The player has one parent who is, or if deceased was, a citizen of the nation the team represents. The player has one parent who was born in the nation or territory the team represents. Let's take Mike Piazza as an example, he was eligible for Italy because Italian law allows the great-grandchild of an Italian to claim citizenship. But British law is much stricter and I'm struggling to find a reason why the Bahamians are eligible
Topicmaster1010 2,490 Posted October 18, 2022 #72 Share Posted October 18, 2022 (edited) The pool's have officially been confirmed! Biggest surprise is that Panama was placed in the Taiwan group while Great Britain is playing in one of the US groups. Pool A Taichung Pool B Tokyo Pool C Phoenix Pool D Miami Cuba Australia Canada Dominican Republic Italy China Colombia Israel Netherlands Czech Republic Great Britain Nicaragua Panama Japan Mexico Puerto Rico Taiwan South Korea United States Venezuela Panama is definitely the biggest winner here as it seems like any of the 5 teams in Pool A can advance out of the pool. Czech Republic gets a decent pool as well. They'll basically have no chance against Japan and Korea but are capable of beating China to avoid having to go through the qualification phase in 2026. Originally thought to be in Pool A, Great Britain now finds itself in Pool C with the other 4 teams being unfavourable matchups. Of course, watch them end up beating Canada just because that's how baseball works. Nicaragua is definitely the biggest losers here. Their WBC debut will see them play in the group of death and they'll have to face off against the powerhouses of the DR, Puerto Rico, Venezuela along with Israel will be mostly the Jewish American team.
