There are rumors that Nordic Combined could be dropped from the Olympics as soon as 2026, per ATR.

If the IOC drops the sport, it will be q unilateral decision. The FIS did not discuss this at all at their recently concluded congress.

The quotas dropped from NC would allow Ski mountaineering to be held with no other sports needing quota cuts.

Part of me wonders if this is being floated to soften the blow when / if the IOC cuts the number of men’s nordic combined quotas in half.

I hope not honestly. It would mean the IOC is taking the page right of the Putin's "Special Operation" book.

Unfortunately, the Nordic combinations is going downhill. If you consider that 10-15 years ago there were still very strong teams or athletes from the USA, France, Italy or Finland.
USA and Italy have completely disappeared from the scene. And France and Finland have if at all single good results times by Herola or Muhlethaler for example. But far away from what was once. The French don't even have a coach at the moment, because the combination hardly plays a role in the federation and not much money for a coach has been calculated in.
In front, there are actually only Norwegians, Germans, Austrians and possibly Japanese. But there is not much to see of internationality. No athletes from North America or the Eastern states who are competitive and in addition the ever decreasing competition from athletes from Central Europe such as France or Italy.
In a certain way, one can question whether something is not going wrong in the combination and one should question the system and whether it makes sense to continue in this way.

Germany and Austria are like the only two nations that seem to care about NC. Norway still has success due to the number of cross country skiers available so there will always be someone breaking through. However in the last 10-15 years cc skiers who don't have enough success in the sport either choose switching to biathlon or retirement outright. NC as the back-up option became less popular.

Finland has declined in cross country in general and likewise Italy. One might argue the rise of freestyle skiing has contributed to that since both these nations are doing pretty well there.

USA has completely tailed off, women's ski jumping is nowhere compared to their dominance from late 00s and early 10s. Men's SJ was poor for ages but at least they had the NC success until recently. Once again you might say the freestyle skiing has drained the talent pool given how technical and expensive the ski jumping part of the sport is.

Czech Republic & Poland are too poor to offer a replacement level. Hell, Czech Republic's ski jumping has regressed badly and nobody, I mean nobody cares about NC in Poland. When we entered a relay that finished 8th in Seefeld WCh there was hope the sport might be revived but our federation quickly buried it and kept all the money in ski jumping like they do for the last 20 years. It spelled the funeral of any NC hopes we have.

    • Spring Nationals, Day #3   Sara Curtis MVP of day 3 of the Italian Spring Nationals!    after improving her PB in the women's 100m freestyle already in the morning heats, in the afternoon final she destroyed not only her previous limit, but also the 9-year old National Record, previously held by our swimming icon Federica Pellegrini 53.01 is the new record   in the same race, Emma Virginia Menicucci was 2nd in 54.14 (big new PB for her) and Chiara Tarantino was 3rd in 54.28   given that Tarantino has a sub-54 PB and also Sofia Morini (here completely out of shape) is a sub-54 swimmer at her best, now the Italian women's 4*100m free relay begins to look like a good one (sure, USA and AUS are out of reach, but the rest of the world is not so far away anymore   more on Today's Finals:   men's 800m Free: 1.Davide Marchello, 7.53.32   women's 200m IM: 1.Sara Franceschi, 2.10.95; 2.Anita Gastaldi, 2.10.97 (PB), both World qualifying times   men's 200m IM: 1.Alberto Razzetti, 1.58.05 (again definitely below the expectations, something's not good with him this week ); 2.Christian Mantegazza, 1.58.95 (big PB, class of 2005)   men's 100m Free: 1.Manuel Frigo, 48.34; 2.Carlos D'Ambrosio, 48.60 (very disappointed with him...he should have swum 1 second faster); 3.Lorenzo Zazzeri, 48.62; 4.Alessandro Miressi, 48.74  even if we can add Ceccon and maybe Deplano (if he convince himself he can swim fast also the 100m and not only the 50m), the 4*100m relay's perspective is really depressing    women's 1500m Free: 1.Simona Quadarella, 16.03.77   in the club relays (the 4*100m medley relays), among the women, Sara Curtis swam "only" 1.01 in the backstroke leg, Bottazzo had a good 1.05.40 in the breastroke leg, confirming his win over the individual distance wasn't a fluke and Tarantino (53.68) and Menicucci (54.11) confirmed the value of their clockings from the individual race also with the flying start among the men, Bacico swam even better than the individual race winning effort (53.42) in the backstroke leg, Martinenghi edged out Viberti in the breastroke leg (58.70 to 58.99), Burdisso swam a decent 50.8 in the fly leg and finally Manuel Frigo confirmed himself the best 100m free specialist of the moment with an impressive 47.2 stint
