Horrible tournament for South Africa as they drop four spots and out of an Olympic qualification position. Australia takes the open spot thanks to their bronze medal performance. Three quotas going to Oceania nations would help ensure the strongest nations qualify to the Olympics, but we are far from over as the top 9 all still have viable chances. Argentina's title allows them to cut into New Zealand's lead. If they can cut the lead again during the Asian swing we could have an interesting finish.

Argentina looks strong and consistent. They will probably qualify at this point if they manage to get to the QF in HK.

Pools are out and could do some huge damages :

A : :ARG :FIJ :SAM :CAN

B : :FRA :GBR :URU :HKG

C : :AUS :USA :ESP :JPN

D : :IRL :NZL :KEN :RSA

B and C look quite straightforward, but Uruguay does have a positive record against GB and Spain-USA are always down to the wire. Making it to the QF would be a gigantic step towards maintaining their spot in the World Series. Uruguay have beaten Fiji, NZ and SA in the span of 7 tournaments (I think it took more than 20 years for France to beat NZ and the W are as rare as you could get) but failing to make the quarters in most of these situations, which is harsh.

And let's talk about the horrible ending of Spain-USA ... Spain butchered a QF by failing to shoot the conversion. Literally.

A and D on the other hand ... which one of Fiji and Samoa get into the top 4 doesn't really matter as long as NZ and Australia are in too. That last Australian try vs Ireland in the pool stage proved to be VERY costly for Canada. They were on the brink of qualifying for the QF, thus scoring at least 10 points ... and ended up dead last. They're now trailing far behind.

South Africa are back to their worst and they better tidy things up or the qualification will get away from them.

Tough luck for Ireland. They can't afford to miss the cup quarterfinals, but will have to go through one of New Zealand or South Africa to do so. Samoa won't like missing another cup quarterfinals either as that pretty much forces them to be great for the final three events. Of course if Oceania can prevent South Africa from finishing in the top 4 the point is pretty moot

With New Zealand winning another event and Argentina failing to reach the cup semis things are looking pretty good for them to win the overall title. With both Australia and Samoa failing to reach the cup quarterfinals, South Africa has moved into the final Olympic quota position. Ireland and the United States did enough to keep pace while Fiji is getting closer to solidifying their spot to the games. The fight for the final core team spot is interesting as Spain leapfrogged Uruguay while Kenya lost ground overall.

New Zealand has grabbed the first Olympic quota on the men's side and can win the overall title as early as next tournament. South Africa drops out of an Olympic qualifying spot, but is still in contention against Australia and Samoa. While not officially eliminated, the United States and Ireland are pretty much done. Great Britain continues to improve after a slow start to the season. Uruguay swaps with Spain for a permanent spot. The top 11 after the next event will remain permanent members while 12-14th plus the challenge series winner will battle it out for the final spot in London.

    • Well, we're just a few hours away from the start of this series, with the first stop being in my home city, on which the "boycott" was lifting afther the whole 2017 World Aquatics Championships cancellation some years ago. I'll be attending on Saturday and Sunday (finals days), and will try to share some pictures.   One of the novelties is that the qualification for the "stages" have suffered some modifications, with more athletes given a chance to start in both individual and synchro events (of course, they needed to obtain certain scores at designated competitions in the past months, including 2024 World Championships and 2024 Olympic Games).   The most significant change however, we'll be seen at the finals, in which there will be a head to head format, which you can read more here.

    • Too bad to hear another case in which athletes are really ashamed and exploited by careless, insensitive bastards, to the point some of them quit the sport they love.   Some months ago I helped a former junior Mexican judo competitor to create his own school. One of the main points he wanted to add to the statutes of his association was the existence of a medical and welfare committee, which helped kids with potential abuse from coaches and that this could be replicated at the local level by other schools and the State's judo association. He told me in his own experience, this conducts are often tolerated and silenced by the national federations in order to get more public funding, which of course, is disgusting.
