It is actually very annoying for many of us Indians as well.

The thing is that a large number of our wrestlers and boxers come from the state of Haryana.

Now I am no expert in the subject, and somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but from what I understand, many people in Haryana believe in never ever using your surname with your name because your surname identifies your caste.

There has been some unfortunate caste-based violence in the past in Haryana and, as a result, many believe that the best way to avoid it is to just never ever reveal your caste as it doesn't matter. In fact, I think some of the big boxing and wrestling stables in Haryana actually have a rule that you are not allowed to use your surname.

Thanks. Good that wrestling and boxing aren't big in the Netherlands and I probably won't write too much about it on a Dutch website, because it would feel really strange to write some article and only mentioned someone's first name :p

brackets are out for tomorrow. only 61kg bracket looks balanced. unbelievably one sided draw in other 3 weights. we will have lots of "lucky medalists"

61kg draw looks OK. Bowne-Rashidov final is more possible. our young wrestler has to deal with Bowne in 2nd round.

74kg, top half is VERY hard. Burroughs and Chamizo are both there and to make things worse we also have Sidakov ! no chance for any other wrestler in top half including our Hosseinkhani, in bottom half things look good for Demirtas. probably Abdurakhmanov is the favorite for the bronze medal.

86kg. the whole year UWW tried to promote a possible Yazdani-Taylor match for possible 86kg final but guess what they got each other right in the first round :facepalm:Kurugliev of Russia is also there !! plus Aminashvili and the Cuban wrestler. couldn't be worse . top half looks empty . good chance for another silver for Makoev of Slovakia or maybe Turkish wrestler. or maybe a lucky bronze for the host nation.

125kg. I barely remember a draw worse than this ! unbelievable . just unbelievable. if I had to name top 8 wrestlers in this weight. 7 of them are in bottom half. and with both Akgul and Geno there. all other wrestlers have no chance for medal already. (including our wrestler Hadi) the American Gwiazdowski will walk into the final easily. and we will have a very lucky bronze medalist there. maybe first ever freestyle medal for China ! or Mongolia.

125kg is really quite a disaster. It should not be so hard to create proper seeds before the tournaments.

Quote

Bonne is known for an aggressive wrestling style that includes explosive throws and other eye-catching maneuvers. According to one wrestling outlet, Bonne's wrestling style "has put the phrase 'Bonne Bombs' into the wrestling lexicon."

Cool, I want live streams or videos or something :cheer:

Where's the Cuban legend who throws Akgul around when it really matters (Olympics)? :(

Edit: never mind, he's a Greco-Roman wrestler, my bad :d

At least we have some "new", non-traditional nations competing on the first day already, like Bolivia, Liberia or even Sudan twice!

I also like the names Adanabasier :CHN and Catriel Muriel  :ARG. :d

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
