To be fair, the quota limit was 2005, so "only" some 350 overboard. :p

Tremendous job indeed, I prefer 2377 athletes than 1725 :d

I'll much prefer these quotas were spent on smaller sports that have much less quotas, or even better on new sports !

Besides, IAAF achieved that whithout the Russians. Next stop 2500 athletes ?

Heats and preliminary rounds of the 100m (and in swimming the 50/100 freestyle) are some of my favourite events, since it's often the only chance you get to see the athletes from the tiny nations compete :cheer:

Exactly. :) Though sometimes it's dissapointing that so many of those nations always have only 100m runners. It's nice to see when someone tries something else too (for example Solomon Islands opted for two 5000m runners this time and that's cool :d).

There will be only 3 heats in men's 100m.

The name doesn't matter, there are 500 races before we get to the important stuff (the semis).

I absolutely agree, but since they are mostly in the 100m, those series are by far my favourite series/heats of any event at the Olympics :d

I mean, the Bolt's and Gatlin's and Merritt's and Van Niekerk's, we see them in the regular season plenty of times (well with the exception of Bolt I guess, but you know what I mean). The fun stuff is seeing athletes of all kinds of tiny nations struggle to post a time that would give them a chance to reach the women's quarter-finals

I don't find the charm in that, being embarassed in front on millions is not something nice.

Though it's natural that most countries want universality places in 100m, since the short time of the event makes it less embarassing for them. No country wants to have an Eric the eel after all.

That depends on how you define being embarrassed. I honestly don't think an athlete of let's say Tuvalu will feel embarrassed, since the goal is to be at the Olympics, not to win a medal and post blistering times.

Of course I know the opinions on it are very different, but for me one of the big charms of the Olympics (and world championships in athletics/swimming) is the extremely rare chance to see athletes from all those nations you don't normally see :)

Especially when you give them a search on Google, they often have a way more interesting backstory than the superstars that everyone knows and who think they are even more awesome than they actually are.

    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
