please, God! save us from this! :pope:

Hard Agree. There is an established full contact small sided version of gridiron, Arena Football. That could 'maybe' be justified if there was sufficient international interest. but flag? If World Rugby had suggested adding 'touch rugby' instead of sevens, they'd have been mocked forever.

LET'S GET RID OF THOSE ARTISTIC ENTERTAINING ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE NEVER TO DO WITH SPORT!

ALTIUS, CITIUS, FORTIUS...if the final result is not measurable according to at least one of those 3 principles, it's not an a sport and it shouldn't be in the Olympic program :bones:

Archery was one of the first events in the Olympics - which of higher, faster, stronger is it?

I agree the subjectivity and arbitrariness of Breaking is a bad look - it is not Olympics ready, in my honest opinion. The gymnastics set have tried hard to move toward a code of points that has a focus on objective criteria - there's no reason skateboard and BMX freestyle cannot follow suit. Surf is in the same place as breaking - not ready, not sufficiently objective.

I have no comment to make on dancing horses as sport.

Report in "The Times" in London

"Olympic chiefs are set to give cricket the go-ahead this week to be included as a new sport for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Olympic chiefs are set to give cricket the go-ahead this week to be included as a new sport for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

The International Olympic Committee’s executive board is to decide on additional sports for the LA Games on Friday and sources say that men’s and women’s T20 cricket will be included. Any decision will need to be ratified by the IOC’s session in Mumbai, India, next month.

Thomas Bach, the IOC’s president, is understood to be very keen to include cricket because of its appeal to the vast populations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which are traditionally not so engaged in Olympic sports as other parts of the world. An Olympic T20 tournament would be expected to attract enormous numbers of TV viewers.

LA 2028 organisers (LA28) are understood to be willing to accommodate cricket in return for “flag football” — a non-contact version of American football where players are tackled by having Velcro tags removed — being included as well.

Bach has been encouraging India to bid for the 2036 Olympics, which would be the first time it has hosted the Games, saying there is a “strong case” to take the multi-sport event there. Having cricket established as an Olympic sport would be a big boost towards that and would also be appropriate for the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia. It would also receive a positive reception in Mumbai during the IOC session on October 15-17.

The ICC has agreed to some compromises — making the men’s and women’s tournaments run at different times and making them as short as possible with two matches a day. The format would be two groups of four teams, with the top two in each going through to the semi-finals.

The IOC and LA28 are also understood to have reached a compromise over total athlete numbers which would allow more than the total of 10,500. Organisers have said the athletes’ village can operate inside its full capacity by spreading the schedule more, so that different sports take place at different times."

If it’s variety we are looking for, there must be alternatives that are easier to follow than Cricket.

Re: Breaking. I watched the finals of the European Games, and I did not have a clue how the battles were going.

Cricket is incredibly easy to follow. The JARGON is complex. The game is simple.

Bat and ball / 'safe haven' game

two teams of 11, substitutes can field, but not bat or bowl.

large oblongish field of play, in the middle a strip and two targets at either end.

A player in the fielding team 'bowls' 6  balls at a time toward a target (wicket), alternating each end, with a specialist 'catcher' behind the target at all times. all eleven of the fielding team are on the pitch.

There are two batters at any one time, the striker and the non-striker.

They score by hitting the ball, and running between the targets before the ball is returned to the target, each cross over is one 'run', you can get extra runs for getting the ball over the boundary rope, with (4) or without (6) bounces.

Both must run to score unless a boundary is scored.

Runs are also awarded for foul balls

You can get a batter out if

  • you strike the target when he bowls (or the batter does),
  • your team catch the ball after striker hits it and before it bounces,
  • you hit the target before a running batsman has got back in time (run out),
  • you hit the target if a batsman 'wanders' out of his safe haven (stumping) immediately after a ball is bowled, or
  • on some occasions if the ball hits the batters leg, and the leg is in the way of the target (LBW)

There are also a small number of ways to be out for basically obstruction, but they are rare.

Batsman bat one after another in one big turn until the batting side no longer has two batsmen not out to run - at that stage the team is 'all out', and batting and field team swap places, and the 'new' batting side tries to beat the score of the first side.

Bowling can be done in a variety of ways, with the key that

  • ball should be released before a foot crosses a certain line,
  • ball should hit the ground on the way, and
  • ball should be released with an unbent elbow - as such, the ball is 'bowled' not 'pitched'

In a 'limited overs' game, the batting team has a maximum number of balls (usually calculated in batches of 6 called 'overs', because that's when the fielding side switch over and bowl from the other end - so 120 balls is 20 overs) and once they've used them up, even if they have men left to bat, the batting teams turn (innings) is over.

And that is basically it - everything else is nuance and jargon, not needed to understand the game, only certain commentators

Key difference is

- Baseball is a pitchers game, scores are low, and the key gamechanging moments therefore belong, largely, to the batter (generally, you get a bigger cheer for a home run than a strike out)

- Cricket is a batters game, scores are high, and the key gamechanging moments therefore belong, largely, to the fielder (generally, you get a bigger cheer for a wicket than a four)

If you get cricket in in'28, it vastly increases the chances of India bidding for - and getting - a 36 Olympics - and indeed South Africa getting a 40 Olympics - and if cricket is in 28, 32, 36 and 40, you're never getting rid of it, except possibly in a swap with baseball in those hosts who much favour the baseball.

There was talk a while back of a THREE week Olympics, that would be possible because athletes would no longer stay in the village the whole time, but would move out as their sports concluded - apparently there would be 'mini' closing ceremonies each weekend to allow departing athletes a big last night, and Swimming, Gymnastics and Athletics would be used as the week long 'tent-poles', with swimming overlapping with gymnastics on the second weekend, and gymnastics overlapping with athletics on the third. The idea seemed to be that there were massive cost savings to be made in having an athletes village of about 7000 - even if you had to fill, empty and refill the village twice.

Sorry, I missed out the final section of the report from The Times

"The new sports at Paris 2024, including break-dancing and sport climbing, are expected to be retained. Baseball and softball’s hopes of being reinstated for LA 2028 are still in doubt due to issues with Major League Baseball, while there are some concerns that modern pentathlon will be dropped."

What a load of BS... Originally, the additional sports - who were part of the Agenda 2020 program whose sole purpose was to cut costs for the hosts - were a neat idea on paper. They were supposedly be a net-postive for the host using local sports popularity to ease the pain of hosting. Now LA, will have to build a freaking dam cricket stadium somewhere.

It was never reported, but it's also very easy to assume Breaking entry for 2024 was IOC Bach's idea and only his.

Basically, these additional sports have been turn into a way of expanding the olympic program and adding new sports, potentially huge cash makers for the organisation, without the political cost of dropping other established olympic sports.

    • 2028 Team Size Projection – Jan 2026 Update   Here’s an update to my 2028 Team Size Projection. While I touch upon major events changes may occur due to results in smaller events. Additionally, several sports released their qualification document so there may be cases where I have to update the projection. I will only include sports where there is an update.   Here is the link to the updated sheet.     Aquatics (Water Polo) The Men’s European Championships saw take gold. The victory moved Serbia up a few places between European nations. With that said, no one fell out of Olympic qualification with the likes of France and Romania still on the outside looking in. remains on the edge.   Athletics (Marathon) Both the Xiamen and Osaka marathons were held this month along with a few other smaller events. While there were a few changes in the rankings, in terms of Olympic projections gains an athlete in the men’s marathon at the expense of   Badminton Major tournaments include the Malaysia Open and India Open. New updates which affected projections include the women’s doubles where overtook . As Polina Buhrova is also scheduled to compete in the singles event, an additional spot has been open. Other changes in the women’s singles was loses one of their quotas. and benefit from those losses.   Indonesia’s loss on the women’s side is offset by gaining a second player in the men’s singles. This puts   on the outside.   Canoeing The qualification document for both Slalom and Sprint were released/updated. No significant changes were found in the Sprint update. Slalom had significant changes relative to 2024 where the initial quotas will be decided by rankings and kayak cross will now have significant quotas being allocated. After adjustment, the following nations lost a quota; Andorra, Chinese Taipei, Ireland, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Sweden. The following nations gained a quota; Canada, China, France, Italy, South Africa, Spain, and Tunisia.   Cricket The Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier was held. No changes to the projection.   Equestrian (Dressage & Jumping) Various World Cup events were held. No changes to the projections were made.   Fencing We had two Grand Prix this month, one for epee and the other for sabre. In men’s epee, overtakes . On the women’s side, the United States moved into the top 4 in the team ranking, pushing Estonia down to fifth. This pushed out of Olympic qualification while takes the Americas quota. This caused a downstream effect on the individual side as Ukraine takes an individual quota and Canada relinquishes their quota, additionally, gained a quota while lost one.   In men’s sabre, now takes the Asian team quota pushing down to just an individual quota. No changes were found in women’s sabre.   Handball Four men’s continental championships were held this month. finished top in Africa while a couple of upsets were saw in South America and Asia where and won over and respectively. Despite their wins, they currently haven’t leapfrogged into being projected to qualify. We’ll see how they perform at the World Championships.   Europe saw finish fourth. This was enough to push it into Olympic qualification projection. They pushed out.   Rowing The qualification document was released. There was a change in boat allocation relative to 2024 and the continental qualifier was slightly different than what I projected. Additionally, I assumed coastal rowing would allow 2 men and 2 women to compete in its three events, but the max is 1 man and 1 woman. This has caused significant changes to the projections.   Overall, the United States lost four quotas. Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, and Spain lost two quotas and Algeria, Argentina, Croatia, Cuba, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Portugal, Tunisia lost one quota.   The following nations have gained two athletes; Japan, Morocco while the following nations gained one athlete; Angola, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Chinese Taipei, Cote d’Ivoire, Denmark, Estonia, Kuwait, Latvia, Mexico, Romania, Philippines, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Togo, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu   Rugby Sevens Fixing a couple of mistakes. First on the men, actually has the Asian quota over and in the women as is essentially shutting down the program, I think it is only right to remove them until they decide to compete again. This means is also projected to qualify.   As for new updates, we saw the third tier SVNS compete, which brought no new updates and the Singapore SVNS. I also didn’t add the Dubai or Cape Town SVNS in my calculations. For both, while there was some shuffling no one ultimately fell out.   Shooting The Asian Shotgun Championships were held this month. A few top shooters were missing. The only change to the projection is is set to qualify in women’s trap, pushing out   Squash The Tournament of Champions was held this month. Additionally, the qualification document was released. There was some restriction as to how many nations can send two players and this sport will offer universality quotas.   The following nations lost an athlete quota; Colombia, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and New Zealand. The following nations gained an athlete quota; Canada, Pakistan, Spain (x2), Switzerland, Ukraine   Triathlon The qualification document was released. There are a few changes relative to 2024. Projection changes include: Losses to Hong Kong and Slovenia and gains for Austria and China.   Weightlifting The qualification document was released. One change to be made was the reallocation process for host nation quotas. Due to this, El Salvador Iraq, Palau, Sri Lanka, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu lost quotas while Australia, China, Dominican Republic, Iran, and Samoa (x2) gained quotas.   Wrestling The qualification document was released. There were some significant changes to the qualification process including using the world rankings and the final qualifier only consisting of non-qualified nations. The projection changes are as follows; losses to Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, and Turkey.   Belgium and Lithuania gained 2 quotas while American Samoa, Austria, Estonia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Latvia, Madagascar, Spain, and Turkmenistan gained 1 quota.
    • Looks like we in the Philippines are in the same situation. No news yet on whether we’ll be able to watch the Games
    • Cricket is any day in a better position than Baseball, Modern Pentathlon or Rowing 8s globally
    • http://i.imgur.com/gLJZbix.jpg   Honestly football is just on another level. For other sports, an expanded field or creating multiple host cities likely only works with baseball, cricket and maybe basketball, and only in very specific countries.
    • No streaming for the games in India. I contacted IOC they just sent me a list where the games will be shown live.    Last games we had the Olympic channel and YouTube showing the live coverage for regions with no media rights. This time sadly no such schedule.   So much about making the games accessible to all...
    • What revealed those files of Epstein !!!! thousands of scandals , horrible diguisting things mixing politic criminalities , robbery , scam , manipulation...etc    all those celebrities of shht that you love
    • I wonder if instead of having flexibility around what sport to add there should be one or two team sports per game with an expanded field (of 16 or 32 or w/e) where the host gets to pick which which team sports (if any) has an expanded field.
