Interesting comparisons:

Coach of the german women's volleyball team when they qualified for the women's nations league final for the first time: Vital Heynen :BEL

Coach of the german men's volleyball team when they last were relevant at world stage (Bronze at 2014 worlds, only ever medal for Germany): Vital Heynen :BEL

Coach of the german men's handball team when they last won a medal at world stage (Bronze at the 2016 olympics): Dagur Sigurdsson :ISL

Coach of the women's basketball team when they reached their best result in 25 years (6th at this year's european championships): Lisa Thomaidis :CAN

Just getting into the final four alongside France, Netherlands and Spain is okay to me.

Don't see how, would probably need a fluke like in 2022. They have absolutely no concept (coach's fault) and they don't have the right mentality/aren't "independent" (problem of the system/youth academies). They (it is the same with the men) always look like "passengers", they just let it happen and are completely unable to adapt/snap out of it. No accountability.

With the group stage over here's how each continent performed.

Federation Win Draw Loss Points Percent
AFC 7 1 10 22 40.74%
CAF 5 3 4 18 50.00%
CONCACAF 3 5 10 14 25.93%
CONMEBOL 3 2 4 11 40.74%
OFC 1 1 1 4 44.44%
UEFA 19 8 9 65 60.19%

Unsurprisingly, Europe is the best performing continent with 8/12 nations advancing to the round of 16. More surprising is Africa being the second best continent where the teams obtained 50% of the total possible points and 3/4 nations advance to the round of 16. CONCACAF was the worst performing continent by quite a bit though in their defense, they did qualify two extra teams via the play-offs. However, even removing Haiti and Panama they would still finish last, but with a more comparable 38.89%

Germany and France do have the two relatively easy groups though. If they both win, Germany are in.

However.. if you can't beat Korea or Colombia, even Iceland may well just be a problem too..

UEFA teams got more than 60% of the total possible amount of points, it's not like UEFA teams could have gotten 12 (teams) x 3 (matches) x 3 (points) = 108 points in total with matches like Sweden - Italy or Netherlands - Portugal :p

Not a big deal of course and still a nice comparison, just thought it'd be worth a mention.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
