Cross-Country Skiing 2018 - 2019 Discussion Thread

From the article about the Cross Country committee: the FIS is finally changing the terminology "ladies" to "women". About time (ladies is the female version of "gentlemen", not "men", always found it a bit annoying that they had men's and ladies' events).

The world is going to be a better place now.

There's also this one.

Editorial changes – ladies to women, he/she to gender neutral expressions

The them and they of the FIS Committee have earned their money for the year.

I do wonder what this one means:

The nominations for technical delegates for the upcoming seasons are gender equal. This is not only due to the wish to implement more female experts in official positions but also because of the level of competence of the female applicants.

Surely they're not specifically going to do everything to have a 50/50 balance, but they'll simply look at whoever is the best person for the position, regardless of being male/female/anything else?

Oh fuck me.

World Cup calendar 2019/2020

- Minor changes of the World Cup calendar include: sprint F in Planica, Individual C competitions in Nove Mesto (replacing relay) with pursuit C on the second day.

- Program Ski Tour 2020 finalized

- Québec city/Minneapolis Sprint Tour finalized (Sprint C, sprint F, Sprint F – 50 World Cup points per race

- In the final version of the 2019/20 World Cup calendar the Committee agreed on including the first ever Cross-Country mixed relay race as the final World Cup race in Canmore (CAN) in 2020. The race format is defined with 4x5km C/F.

And 'boooo!' to replacing yet another relay.

The worst change in my opinion though:

The final race of the Tour de Ski – the famous Alpe Cermis climb – will be held in a mass start format.

What the hell. The cool thing about the final Alpe Cermis climb, apart from the climb itself, is that whoever finishes first wins the Tour de Ski. Easy. Why complicate things?

Yeah, now it's going to be way harder to see who are battling for what position, what difference is needed etc. I know they probably want a head-2-head fight and not only single people climbing the hill, with the intervals between them, but it really gives away the fight to chase your opponent..

Those single people closing in on each other or moving away from each other was what made it so epic in my opinion. Pretty much the only XC race where you can so clearly see the suffering of one person at a time.

Plus it was literally the only pursuit on the entire calendar I liked in pursuit format

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
    • Also, I just logged back into my account, where it sent me to update my profile, and when I saved that, I got a screen that included a check mark next to 'Registered for the Draw'.  Not sure I totally trust it, but it does at least say so.  (There's nothing specifically referencing Drop 2 or anything...might just be a stock screen.). I'm curious what it would look like if you looked at it @esube.  https://tickets.la28.org/
