IOC will have to at least push it or more sponsors will withdraw and countries will talk about setting up an alternative Olympics instead.

Which countries? The one that will host the Games in 6 years? They will just be angry, condemn it, and then move on to the next Games. What you are talking about has no precedents in sport. There's too much money at stake for everyone involved, it's the same reason why the boycotts of the 80s will never happen again.

Everytime a Russian Performs the Olympics is losing more and more viewers permanently. This could be the final straw for many. Many will simply refuse to watch Paris and Milan if Russians are there.

Ah yes, I was missing Orangehair's campaign to cancel every Olympics there is. Didn't happen with Beijing so now we're cancelling Paris & Cortina :p

Do you have any data to back this up? There were always doping scandals at the Games, but people still kept watching. Hell, the current scandal is so spicy that it might increase the viewership for the women's event if Valieva will compete.

It won’t. Just look online. People have been put off by the presence of Russia as it makes it a disgrace at how stupid they are being allowed to compete.

In fact i think the IOC could lose any hope for anyone wanting to bid for 2030 if Russia are not expelled permanently from international sports.

Surley Rusda knew yesterday the IOC would appeal. Maybe that was the plain. Politically it suits Putin for it be dealt with by non Russians not Rusda.

They have two to four (depending on how real you think the Barcelona and Vancouver bids are) solid bids already lined up. 2030 won't be an issue at all.

Problem is:

This could be influenced two ways:

1./ Internal change inside the Russian system - this is impossible as only the athletes concerned could initiate it (no one else in Russia is interested in terminating Russia's doping policies) and they either don't want to jeopardize their own position (life is unhappy, brutish and short in Putinist Russia unless you are rich & famous) or if they do, they will be sidelined as they are only objects in order to attain the greater goal - glory to Mother Russia

2./ Enough other country athletes / sponsors make a fuss that they are not willing to compete / sponsor if Russian doping is not sorted out. This is a typical coordination problem from game theory - they could make a difference if they acted together in a coordinated way but for several reasons this is unlikely to happen.

Given the fact that the Olympics are overseen by an organisation that is world leading in corruption & hipocrisy (the IOC) the most likely solution is some kind of "muddling through" - maybe Russia is warned that they will be punished real hard if they don't sort out doping by 2024 - and then nothing happens.

Sorry for Valieva though, she is a really talented young athlete, too bad she is used this way for power political purposes.

Maybe the IOC should simply say they won’t recognise any court judgements that overturn full bans for Russians and will simply deny the, entry.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. This will be the eighth time the session is held in Italy, the last one being during the Turin 2006 Olympic Games.

    • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
