Rebecca Smith will probably

But it doesn't clash with any of her events so it'd be strange for her to just give up a relay medal opportunity without good reason.

Can’t give up a relay medal opportunity if you weren’t even selected in the first place :p

Rebecca Smith will be more than enough to advance to the final, and with MSH’s big schedule it would probably be best to save her for her other events. I’d even put Maggie MacNeil over her for prelims.

:USA US Olympic Trials: Day 5

Finals:

Women's 100m Freestyle (OQT: 53.61)

1. Kate Douglass - 52.56 Q

2. Torri Huske - 52.93 Q

3. Gretchen Walsh - 53.13 q

4. Simone Manuel - 53.25 q

5. Abbey Weitzeil - 53.70 q?

6. Catie DeLoof/Erika Connolly - 53.86 (Swimoff needed)

Very good time for Douglass. There'll be a swimoff in tomorrow's finals session to decide who gets the final spot on the relay team.

Men's 200m Butterfly (OQT: 1:55.78)

1. Thomas Heilman - 1:54.50 Q

2. Luca Urlando - 1:55.08 Q?

3. Mason Laur - 1:55.37

4. Dare Rose - 1:55.70

5. Colby Mefford - 1:56.43

6. Jack Dahlgren - 1:56.63

7. Trenton Julian - 1:57.07

8. Zach Harting - 1:57.69

I believe Heilman becomes the youngest US male Olympian swimmer since 2000. Also happy for Urlando to make his first Olympic team. He was also a junior star but was dealing with injuries for the past few years.

Women's 1500m Freestyle (OQT: 16:09.09)

1. Katie Ledecky - 15:37.35 Q

2. Katie Grimes - 15:57.77 Q

3. Ashley Twichell - 16:08.07

4. Kate Hurst - 16:09.77

5. Aurora Roghair - 16:09.79

6. Rachel Stege - 16:10.03

7. Erica Sullivan - 16:29.88

8. Mariah Denigan - 16:34.19

In shocking news, Katie Ledecky wins. Easy qualification for both her and Grimes. With both of them doubling up, the rest of the female 2nd place finishers are now officially on the US team.

Men's 200m Breaststroke (OQT: 2:09.68)

1. Matt Fallon - 2:06.54 Q (American Record)

2. Josh Matheny - 2:08.86 Q?

3. AJ Pouch - 2:09.05

4. Will Licon - 2:09.38

5. Daniel Roy - 2:09.44

6. Nic Fink - 2:09.56

7. Jake Foster - 2:09.64

8. Josh Bey - 2:11.66

After qualifying for the finals in 1st place at the 2021 Olympic Trials, Matt Fallon couldn't maintain his momentum and finished last. But he wasn't going to make the same mistake setting an American record in this race. He'll be firmly in the medal conversation. After barely missing qualifying in the 100m breaststroke, Josh Matheny got the job done here to likely qualify for his first Olympics. Heartbreaking for Jake Foster who missed the opportunity to go to the Olympics alongside his brother. Also heartbreaking for Will Licon who finished 4th here after finishing 3rd at the last two Olympic Trials.

Men's 100m Freestyle (OQT: 48.34)

1. Chris Guiliano - 47.38 Q

2. Jack Alexy - 47.47 Q

3. Caeleb Dressel - 47.53 q

4. Hunter Armstrong - 47.78 q

5. Ryan Held - 47.82 q?

6. Matt King - 47.94 q?

7. Destin Lasco - 48.14

8. Macguire McDuff - 48.64

Not surprisingly, the final was slower than the heats and semifinals (likely due to all the big men swimming next to each other and creating waves). You can add Dressel to the list of defending champions who won't get to the chance to repeat. Although he still put up a solid time and will be on the relays. Great to see his comeback. The 4x100m freestyle relay record could be in jeopardy. With the lack of doubles on the men's side so far, it's possible that Matt King may not be able to go the Olympics. Destin Lasco scratched the 200m backstroke heats this morning (an event he was favoured to qualify in) to focus on this race and unfortunately, it didn't work out for him.

Semi-finals:

Advancing to Women's 200m Butterfly Final:

1. Regan Smith - 2:04.91

2. Alex Shackell - 2:06.10

3. Emma Sticklen - 2:07.44

4. Dakota Luther - 2:08.36

5. Lindsay Looney - 2:08.60

6. Tess Howley - 2:08.79

7. Lucy Bell - 2:08.90

8. Charlotte Hook - 2:09.50

Could very well see a 2:03 from Regan Smith tomorrow. She and Alex Shackell look like the favourites to qualify.

Advancing to Men's 200m Backstroke Final:

1. Keaton Jones - 1:55.49

2. Ryan Murphy - 1:55.69

3. Jack Aikins - 1:55.95

4. Tommy Janton - 1:56.87

5. Daniel Diehl - 1:57.29

6. Jay Litherland - 1:57.59

7. Hunter Tapp - 1:57.79

8. Caleb Maldari - 1:57.99

Really impressive swim from Keaton Jones to get the top seed. That swim ranks 3rd in the world this year. With Lasco scratching, the battle for the 2nd spot is wide open assuming Murphy qualifies.

Advancing to Women's 200m Breaststroke Final:

1. Kate Douglass - 2:21.23

2. Lilly King - 2:22.45

3. Alex Walsh - 2:22.81

4. Ella Nelson - 2:23.84

5. Kaelyn Gridley - 2:25.82

6. Anna Keating - 2:27.60

7. Raya Mellott - 2:28.61

8. Isabelle Odgers - 2:29.03

A bit slower than the morning heats for Kate Douglass here but she had the 100m freestyle in the same session so it makes sense. Looks like a battle between King and Walsh for the 2nd spot. Notably, 46 year old Gabrielle Rose finished 16th in 2:30.44

I will admit I'm a little relieved but the Americans are bound to figure it out eventually. Hopefully Wunsch develops into another 52 low (or faster) swimmer so we can keep the legacy going.

I do like the US women’s chances in the medley relay.
